HURON — The Sioux Falls Christian boys and the O’Gorman girls emerged with team titles in the varsity races during the Clyde Cotton Huron Invitational Cross Country Meet on Saturday at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

Sioux Falls Christian, who had the race winner in Isaac Davelaar, finished with 34 points to claim the boys’ varsity team title. Aberdeen Central was second at 55, followed by Brandon Valley at 83, Sioux Falls Washington at 93 and Watertown at 131. Huron was seventh at 190.

Davelaar had a winning time of 16:24.93 for the Chargers.

Cheech Harman led Huron with a time of 18:10.72, which was a personal record for him over the 5K distance to place him 21st overall. Will Radke was 46th for the Tigers at 19:16.97.

“The course was back to normal, which means it was more challenging than last year’s course,” Huron coach Angie Thomas said. “So, for Cheech to PR, it really speaks to how hard he’s been working throughout the season and how hard he worked in the offseason.”

Daniel Ayoroa was 32nd in the boys’ varsity race for James Valley Christian.

Rounding out the lineup for the Huron boys’ were Cameron Cutshaw and Angel Olivo Porcayo, who finished in spots No. 61 and 62, respectively, with times of 20:18.86 and 20:19.79, and Gonzalo Quispe-Laura, who was 69th at 20:58.34.

O’Gorman had four of the top five runners in the girls’ varsity race, including the race winner Katie Castelli. The Lady Knights finished with 39 points to edge Brandon Valley by five points for the top spot.

Aberdeen Central was third at 93, followed by Sioux Falls Christian at 125 and Chamberlain at 153.
Castelli turned in a winning time of 18:50.66 for O’Gorman.

Abby Hasart of James Valley Christian and Victoriah Buffington of Huron finished in spots No. 31 and 32, respectively, with times of 21:31.81 and 21:32.56. Brooklyn Boetel was 41st for the Tiges at 22:05.56.

TJ Lien was the top Huron runner in the junior varsity boys’ race. He finished ninth with a time of 18:58.92, which was a personal best for him in the 5K race.

“TJ was concerned with how well he was going to run due to not feeling well all week, as he had been fighting a head cold and sinus congestion,” Thomas said. “For him to run a personal best and place ninth at our 17-team invite, proves how much of a competitor he really is.”

Huron’s Josie Vlieger led a trio of area runners to finish in the top 20 of the junior varsity girls’ race. Vlieger was 11th with a time of 22:53.86, while JVC teammates Rhoyonna Hood and AbbyKate Hamilton finished in spots No. 13 and 16, respectively, with times of 23:05.60 and 23:13.17.

“I think she started the race a little hesitant due to how she had been feeling (also battling sinus issues) and that it was a 5K and not a 4K like she has been running all season,”  Thomas said of Vlieger. “But, she started turning it on halfway through the race and she had a strong finish.”

Lily Meyer of Huron was seventh in the middle school girls’ race with a tiem of 10:37.84.

“She raced hard all the way to the finish, but was unable to hold off a couple of girls at the end,” Thomas said of Meyer. “She has been improving with each race and it’s fun to watch her compete.”

The Huron cross country teams will compete at the Brookings Invitational on Thursday, while James Valley Christian will be at the Ipswich Tiger Meet on Wednesday.
