Huron opens season against Brookings

HURON — Brookings claimed the win as the team totaled 136.650, to edge out Huron with an overall team score of 126.750, in the season opener varsity gymnastics meet held on Tuesday night at the Huron Tiger Activities Center.
Erica Zell placed third all around to lead the Huron girls with 34.250, while Brookings’ Rachel Gannon took first individual place at 34.650.
Also competing for Huron was Kassie Decker with 31.800 to finish seventh.
“Good first showing for the Huron Tigers. We have a lot of work to do to polish up routines, but I felt the girls had great efforts for their first meet,” said Huron coach Julie King.

Zell was the top finisher in the floor exercise with 9.60, while Decker claimed the first place spot in vault at a 9.050 score, followed by Huron’s Sarah Christenson with 9.00 in second place for the vault category. Brookings led the competition in the uneven parallel bars and balance beam exercises.
“Kassandra Decker and Sarah Christensen had outstanding vaults,” King explained.
“Along with Erica Zell having a flawless floor routine tying her own personal school record.”
In junior varsity action, a 116.950 team score for Brookings took the lead over Huron at 93.250.
Brooking’s Hanna Walsh was first individual placer all around in JV with 29.100, while Huron’s top finisher was Cailey Coss with a 25.200 score.
Huron will be back in action when the team travels to Pierre on Thursday.
“We have some work to do but I am proud of the gir,ls in both JV and varsity,” King said.
