HURON — The Huron Tigers controlled Tuesday night’s Eastern South Dakota Conference volleyball match against the Yankton Gazelles, taking a 3-0 win.
Set scores for the Tigers, now 11-8 on the season, were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17. Yankton‘s season record drops to 6-9.
“This was a really big win for us,” said Huron coach Shelly Buddenhagen.
The points started piling up in set one with hitting errors, which Hollee Niehus ended with the first kill making the score 4-3. Huron had an early 5-0 point run and stayed in the lead throughout the set as the Gazelles tried to keep up. Emily Oswald started the Yankton run with a pair of kills and a kill from Kate Budig brought the score to 22-18 in favor of the Tigers. Niehus took the winning point with a kill ending the first set at 25-19.
“We’re catching some really good airwaves but our serving could always be better,” Buddenhagen stated.
Both teams were passing the lead back and forth to start off the second set. Kills from Niehus and a pair of aces for Jayda Shillingstad brought the Tigers lead to 18-11. Back to back kills from Yankton’s Jessica Reinhardt and some Huron errors brought the Gazelle’s back up, but Kayla Schimke took the win with a couple of kills, ending set two at 25-18.
“We have to keep our kids healthy and fresh,” explained Buddenhagen. “We will work on things we need to and come up with a real game plan Thursday.”
Opening up the third set, Huron took a 9-2 lead before Yankton took a 5-1 point run to pick up some momentum with kills from Reinhardt and Maddy Hochstein. The Tigers leaped ahead to a 10 point lead with a score of 21-11, with combined kills from Niehus, Mikena Moore, Shillingstad and Tracy Albrecht. The Gazelles’ were kept alive with an ace from Jennica Delvaux plus kills from Cameryn Specht and Budig. Although Huron suffered from some errors, they maintained the lead in the final set. Isabell Ford’s ace and Schimke’s seventh kill brought the Tigers to a 23-12 lead. A kill from Carli Lentsch finished the match with a score of 25-17.
“I really like the way this team is playing. They come to practice ready to work and wanting to get better,” Buddenhagen said.
The Tigers will take on the top-ranked Harrisburg Tigers on Friday night for more volleyball action.
