Huron second in JV State Hockey Tournament


WATERTOWN — The top-seeded Sioux Falls Flyers edged the Huron All-Stars 4-3 on Sunday to claim title during the South Dakota Junior Varsity State Hockey Tournament.
After both teams had a goal in the opening period, the Flyers scored three of the first four goals in the third period and were able to hold on for the win.
Sioux Falls got on the board first with an unassisted goal by Emmet Hansen.
The All-Stars hit the net for the first time with less than a minute remaining in the opening period. Carslon Duba scored on a power play, with Izaiah Phillips and Rei Hoops combining on the assist.
Hansen netted the first two goals of the second period for the Flyers to earn a hat trick and put his team back out front. The first was unassisted, while Sebastain Althoff and Jacob Sarahan assisted on the second.
Huron managed to get one of those goals back as Cody Ruedebusch found the net on a pass from Tanner Berquist, but Sioux Falls regained its two-goal advantage with an unassisted goal by Jacob Sarahan during a power play.
Jayden Bogh pulled the All-Stars back to within a goal with just over 10 minutes goal in the final period. He scored on a pass from Phillips.
Sioux Falls goalie Ryan Flanagan would hold Huron scoreless the rest of the way to earn the win. He had 21 saves.
Marty Boetel also recorded 21 saves for the All-Stars.
Huron reached the championship match with a 4-1 victory against Brookings on Saturday.
Duba had the lone goal in the opening period for the All-Stars, with Payton Cass assisting on the play.
The first goal of the second period was the lone goal for Brookings. Luc Bouchard scored on an unassisted shot.
Huron would answer with three straight goals to carry a 4-1 lead into the final period, which would end scoreless.
Hoops had a pair of goals for the All-Stars, with Ruedebusch assisting on the first and Duba assisting on the second.
Phillips had the other goal for Huron, with Mason McDonald and Duba assisting on the play.
Boetel stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced to secure the win in the net for the All-Stars.
Kaden Gutormson had 12 saves for Brookings.
Huron opened play at the JV State Hockey Tournament on Friday, with a 6-2 win over the Sioux Center Storm. The All-Stars got off to a quick start, as Phillips scored an unassisted goals six minutes into the game. Phillips lit the lamp again at the 11-minute mark, off an assist from Hoops. Ruedebusch hit the back of the net, off assists from James Tharp and Hoops, and Huron led 3-0 after the first period.
The second period was nearly scoreless, until the 14-minute mark, when Phillips got his hat trick on a shorthanded rush for the All-Stars and after giving up a late goal, Huron held a 4-1 lead headed to the final period.
A quick goal by Cass made it 5-1, with the assist going to Duba, then Duba wrapped up the scoring for the All-Stars, with Hoops getting his third assist of the night.
Boetel stopped 28 of Sioux Center’s 30 shots on goal to earn the win in goal for Huron. The All-Stars matched the shots on goal, firing 30 at Storm goalie Alex Koops.
