Huron teeners qualify for state tournament

ABERDEEN — The Huron 14U team went 4-1 to claim second place in the region tournament and a berth in the South Dakota Class A VFW Teener Baseball Tournament.
The Tigers, who were seeded third in the 5-team field, opened the region tournament with a 15-5 victory against fourth-seeded Pierre.
Caden McNeil and Johnny Hernandez each had a pair of hits for the Tigers. Hernandez drove in three runs, while Steven DeGeest had a pair of RBIs. Max Kranzler pitched 4 1/3 innings to earn the win, with four strikeouts.
Top-seeded Brookings handed Huron its only setback in the second game with a 20-10 decision.
Hernandez recorded three hits for the Tigers, while Peyton Grace and DeGeest each had a pair of walks.
Huron rebounded from the loss with a 10-7 win against second seeded Aberdeen.

Grace had three hits, while Kranzler had two hits for the Tigers. DeGeest recorded four RBIs. Kranzler and Hernandez each pitched three innings, with Kranzler recording five strikeouts.
Huron then edged Pierre 8-7 to earn a rematch with Brookings.
Jeran Sammons pitched four innings, with four strikeouts to help the Tigers to the win. Drew Arteman pitched two innings.
In the rematch with Brookings, Huron emerged with a 9-6 victory.
Jayden Beck had a pair of hits for Huron, while Will Radke and DeGeest each had a pair of walks. Grace, Kranzler and Beck all had two RBIs for the Tigers.
Hernandez and Arteman handled the pitching duties for Huron, with both recording a pair of strikeouts.
Huron will open the state tourney, which is being held in Brandon Valley, at 5:45 p.m. Thursday against Sioux Falls East at Legion Field.
In the other opening round games, Harrisburg will face Pierre at 5:45 p.m. at Aspen Park; Mitchell will face Brandon Valley at 8 p.m. at Aspen Park; and Yankton will play Brookings at 8 p.m. at Legion Field.
The tournament will continue through Sunday.
