Huron’s Schouten named Region 3 Coach of the Year

HURON — After leading the Huron boys’ basketball team to a 17-4 record and the Eastern South Dakota Conference title this season, head coach Jon Schouten has been named the Region 3 Coach of the Year by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.
Butch Brenden of Clark/Willow Lake was named as the boys’ lower level Coach of the Year in Regions 1-4.
Here is a look at all the winners:
Region 1 — Mike Carlson of Tiospa Zina (head boys), Derek Larson of Aberdeen Roncalli (head girls), Josh Mach of Aberdeen Central (assistant boys) and Denise Clemens of Northwestern (assistant girls).
Region 2 — Bill Vincent of Sioux Valley and Steve Erickson of Elkton-Lake Benton (head boys), Megan Severtson of Flandreau (head girls), Aaron King of Arlington and Russ Huska of Madison (assistant boys) and Brian Relf of Flandreau (assistant girls).

Region 3 — Jon Schouten of Huron (head boys), Chase Casper of Faulkton (head girls), Brice Cunningham of Faulkton (assistant boys) and Ryan Melius of Faulkton (assistant girls).
Region 4 — David Hollenbeck of St. Thomas More (head boys), Travis Swartz of Rapid City Stevens (head girls), Bryce Schaffer of Timber Lake (assistant boys) and Bill Freidel of St. Thomas More (assistant girls).
Region 1-4 — Butch Brenden of Clark/Willow Lake (boys lower level) and Dylan Mickelson of Faulkton (girls lower level).
Region 5 — Nick Koepsell of Howard (head boys), Kent Kolsrud of O’Gorman (head girls), Ray Slaba of Hanson (assistant boys) and Barry Matthies of O’Gorman (assistant girls).
Region 6 — Jay Drake of Vermillion (head boys), Adam Quail of Lennox (head girls), David Preheim of Tea Area (assistant boys) and Dana Bigge of Harrisburg (assistant girls).
Region 7 — Frank Cutler of Platte-Geddes (head boys), Lorisa Broughton of Corsica-Stickney(head girls), Jason Helling of Mt. Vernon-Plankinton (assistant boys) and Lonnie Klundt of Gregory and Eric Norden of Parkson (assistant girls).
Region 8 — Brett Gardner of Winner and Joe Martin of Edgemont (head boys), Larry Aaker of Winner (head girls), Madison McLaughlin of Wall (assistant girls), no winner named (assistant boys).
Region 5-8 — Randy Gross of Yankton (boys lower level) and Bill Hansen of Viborg-Hurley (girls lower level).
