Jessie E. Barton, 94, of Huron

HURON — Jessie E. Barton, 94, of Huron, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2019, at Avantara Huron in Huron, South Dakota.
Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with burial to follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron.
Visitation, with her family present, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Welter Funeral Home; or visitation, one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday.
Jessie Bennett was born on February 8, 1925, in Ionia County Michigan to John and Elda (Conrad) Bennett.  At a young age her family moved back to the Hitchcock/Broadland area.  She graduated from Huron High School in 1944.
Jessie met W. Donald Barton at a dance while he was home on leave from the army.  They were married on July 30, 1948, and lived in Huron. In 1958, they moved back to Don’s home farm.  They farmed, raised sheep and cattle, and as a sideline trained and sold many horses. Jessie was active with the horses, riding until well into her 80’s, 4-H, and was a rodeo grandma to many kids.  She was a member of the Silver Shoes Riding Club, Red Hat Society, Est Fest Trail Riding Ladies, and the Fun-Steppers Dance Club. Jessie and Don wintered in Arizona for 14 years, enjoying the warm weather and dancing.
Following Don’s death, Jessie moved to Huron until 2018, when she returned to the country life with daughter Kay.
She is survived by her children, Warren Barton of Huron, Allen (Diana) Barton of Huron, Kay Barton of Huron, and DeeAnne (Todd) Ellig of Horace, ND; nine grandchildren, Joy (Ben) Meyer, Dena (Jason) Barton, Audra (Wes) Fergen, Jay (Amanda) Barton, Jennifer (Brydon) Manning, Jami (Adam) Whitney, Jared Barton, Tracy Ellig, and Shannon Ellig; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don in 2001; her parents; brothers, John (Catherine) Bennett, and Gene Bennett; sisters, Ella (Hal) Weber, and Patricia (Lyle) Kearney; brothers-in-law, Glenn Lashwood and Hal Weber; and one nephew, John Bennett; a niece, Becky Kusiek; and granddaughter-in-law, Laina Barton.
