HURON — Joan L. Hoffman, 88, of Huron, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, May 25, 2020, under hospice care after a long battle with cancer at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls.


A private family service will be held on Thursday, May 28, at Welter Funeral Home with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron.


Joan Lavonne Buckland was born on August 11, 1931, to Charles and Mabel (Jefferson) Buckland at Bryant. She graduated from Bryant High School in 1949.
On December 29, 1950, Joan was united in marriage to Duane Hoffman of Vienna. They lived on a farm in Vienna. Duane farmed with his Dad and brother for 10 years before moving to Huron in 1960.

Joan was an active member of the American Lutheran Church. Joan worked for JC Penney for several years, the Huron Public Schools for 12 years and the Huron Public Library for 10 years, retiring in 1992. She belonged to the Beadle Bums Sam’s Camping Club for many years and did much volunteer work for the American Lutheran Church, Huron Senior Center, Huron Area, AARP and RSVP.


 Grateful for sharing her life is her husband, Duane; four children; two sons, Charles (Barb) Hoffman, and Rick (Wanda) Hoffman, both of Huron; two daughters, Michelle Hoffman of Pierre, and Kerri (Jeff) Ashby of Rapid City; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren; She is also survived by three sisters, Betty Brodahl of Cypress, Calif., Virginia (Merle) Neu of De Smet, and Tonetta Lunde of Port Washington, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Dee Buckland of Huron; a brother-in-law, Verne Larson of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.


 She was preceded in death by her parents; a half-brother, Chester; two brothers, Floyd and Lester; eight sisters, Lil, Violet, Evelyn, Hazel, Delores, Darlene, Marie, and Shirley; two sisters-in-law; and nine brothers-in-law.
