Join the fight against cancer with Relay for Life

HURON — On Saturday, dozens of participants will join together at the annual Relay For Life of Beadle County beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Huron Campus Center, to help the American Cancer Society attack cancer from every angle.
Through continued research, more and more options are opening up for cancer patients to help them beat the disease, said local cancer survivor Jan LaMont.

Diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer following a routine mammogram in February 2009, she chose to have a mastectomy and breast implant performed by local surgeon Dr. Cy Haatvedt at Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her initial regime of oral chemotherapy was scheduled to last five years, but through continued research, doctors have found it beneficial to extend that treatment an additional five years. LaMont said she hopes to complete her series of oral treatments in 2019.
“With cancer research, the treatments are changing to the good,” LaMont said. “Many of the tests I had in 2009 are no longer used. This research must continue to stop cancer.”
