JVC’S Boomsma wins Senior Showcase

PIERRE — Austin Boomsma of James Valley Christian capitalized on the lone opportunity to play competitive golf Monday during the 2020 South Dakota High School Senior Showcase, which was held at Hillsview Golf Course.

Boomsma, who is the defending Class B boys’ golf state champion, carded a 2-over par 74 on Monday to finish eight strokes ahead of Tryg Aanenson of Freeman, who was the runner-up.

Seniors from all three girls’ classes and the Class B boys’ class were invited to participate in the event, which was the lone competition on the schedule since the state’s entire high school spring sports season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 14 golfers participate in the Class B boys’ portion of the event.

Luke Urevig of Deubrook Area was third at 84, which put him two strokes off Aanenson’s pace. Riley Rankin of Jones County was fourth at 85, followed by Tee Saul of Crow Creek at 87.

O’Gorman teammates Sophia Jansa and Carly Kunkel shared the top spot in the Class AA girls’ division with scores of 80. They also had the lowest scores in the overall girls’ competition.

Sunni Josephson of Sioux Falls Roosevelt was third with an 82, followed by Tanna Lehfeldt of Brandon Valley with an 84 and Megan Dockter of Watertown with an 85.

Lauryn Discoll of West Central at Lauren Tims of Sioux Falls Christian shared the top spot in the Class A girls’ division with scores of 84. Mya Maxwell of Madison and Alexandra Carr of Vermillion tied for third with scores of 86, while Addy Root of Winner was fifth at 89.

Josie Rush of Philip claimed the top spot in the Class B girls’ division with an 83, while Abbie Nelson of Newell was second with an 87. Rounding out the top five were Sophie Johnson Estelline/Hendricks at 92, Mariah VanZee of Platte-Geddes at 94 and Katie Reif of McCook Central/Montrose at 96.
