JVCS plans 62nd annual auction Saturday

HURON — James Valley Christian School will be hosting its 62nd annual auction on Saturday, Nov. 27, at the school.

The event begins with a silent auction and concessions at 4 p.m., with the live auction beginning at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

Concessions will include their famous Valleyburger, hot dogs, gashtel soup, and delicious homemade pies and desserts.

Currently the silent auction is open online for bidding and will wrap up the night of the live event. Get registered to bid at www.jvcs.org.

This year, they retained the online auction, which has already raised $49,000 for the school.

On the auction block are many services and gift certificates for car washes, agricultural services, house cleaning, coffee shops, salons, massages, oil changes, homemade meals for a month, etc.

Donations for the auction also include a purebred bull, furniture, tool chest/cabinet, karaoke machine, grill, smoker, custom-processed beef, snow blower, toys, Christmas decor, home decor, bicycles, and plants.

“There really is something for everyone,” said event organizer Jill Mendel. “Also on the auction are Vikings, Twins and Timberwolves tickets.

“We will also have specialty food items like stritzel, honey, caramels, peanut brittle, nuts, caramel rolls, etc.,” she added.

They will also be raffling a Winchester shotgun. Everyone is welcome to purchase tickets online to win that.

“Our goal is to raise $100,000 to help keep tuition affordable for our families,” Mendel said.

The auction began in 1959, when, going through some storage space, some unused school equipment was discovered.

They found some old typewriters, and as the story goes, they decided to offer the typewriters and some other things for sale. A few people donated some house plants as well and there were some baked goods offered. And that was how it began.

All of the funds raised through the live auction, silent auction, specialty items and from the very popular concessions sales goes toward the operation of the school.
