WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Kay Younie 78 of Wessington Springs passed away Friday August 11, 2017, at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday August 17, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Sara Olson Dean officiating.  Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church with an Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m. followed by a prayer service.
Kay F. Younie was born April 18, 1939, in Plankinton to Carl F. and Esther P. Knigge. She graduated from White Lake High School in 1958. On September 10, 1959, she married Jerry Younie at Friend’s Church west of Wessington Springs. They had two children together, Paul and Jeff.  They spent many years farming and ranching in Jerauld and Buffalo counties. Kay worked hard helping on the farm while raising her two boys and instilled her strong work ethic.
In March 1981, Kay and Jerry moved to Wessington Springs.  Shortly after, she began working at Weskota Manor where she would work for the next 30 years. The first 15 years as a certified nursing assistant and the last 15 years as a restorative therapy aide.  She worked closely with the residents and tried to help them maintain as much independence as possible. She had a passion for helping others and enjoyed motivating the residents. She retired from Weskota Manor in 2012, but continued to volunteer at the nursing home several days per week helping the residents.
Kay loved to visit with her friends and partake in community activities. She also enjoyed seeing her family and loved attending her grandchildren’s school and sporting events. She looked forward to going to Washington every summer to visit her son, Paul, and granddaughter, Hannah, and oftentimes grandchildren, Mandy and Mitchell, went along so they could all spend time together. Kay also loved her cat Tabby, and she had a passion for the Minnesota Twins and followed them very closely. She enjoyed flowers, sewing, and helping out in the community. Kay was a member of the Eastern Star from 1988 to present. She held several offices and was elected as Worthy Matron in 1997.
Kay is survived by her two sons, Paul (Ronna) Younie of Selah, Wa., and Jeff (Renee) Younie of Alpena; three grandchildren, Hannah (Caleb) Burton of Selah, Wa., Mandy (Jason Richter) of Sioux Falls, and Mitchell (Emma Peschong) of Sioux Falls; two great-grandchildren, Cash and Kennedy; five siblings, Laverne Berg, Betty Elias, Ruby Parmely, Gene Knigge, Lois Wolf, and Dennis Knigge.
Kay is preceded in death by husband, Jerry; her parents; four siblings, Peggy Johnson, Hillis Knigge, Krola Hauge, and Emery Knigge.
