Lady Blackhawks emerge with 281 girls’ championship

The Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks got a bit of revenge, as they posted a 58-45 win over the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots to reclaim the girls’ championship at the 281 Conference Tournament.
Hitchcock-Tulare came out on top of the matchup of the same two teams in last year’s tournament and was seeking defense of their title, but a slow third quarter put them in a hole with a deficit that was too much to overcome.
The win put the Blackhawks back on top of the tournament, a position to which they had grown accustomed until the Lady Patriots knocked them off last year.
The Lady Patriots raced to an early lead. However, the Blackhawks settled in and carved the deficit to only four points after one quarter of play. The momentum that SC-W built in the later portions of the first quarter carried over to the second as they took over the lead and built themselves a six-point lead at the half.
Needing to make a run in the third quarter, the Lady Patriots went cold from the field. Hitchcock-Tulare only registered eight points in the quarter, while the Blackhawks were putting up 16 counters to make the difference 14 points headed to the final quarter.
The Lady Patriots began chipping away and got the deficit down to nine points with less than two minutes to play, but down the stretch the Blackhawks kept finding Tesa Jensen and she responded with nine of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter.
In addition to Jensen’s 20 points, Kaylee White chipped in 11 points and added six rebounds.
The Lady Patriots got 16 points from Elizabeth Salmen, Dannyn Peterson scored 12 and Dawsyn Otto chipped in 11. Ashley Masat led all rebounders in the game with nine caroms.
Sanborn Central-Woonsocket’s 5-foot, 10-inch senior, Megan Poyer was selected as the Carr Chiropractic Tournament MVP. For the tournament, Poyer, scored 45 points and had 24 rebounds to help the Blackhawks win the title.

Third-place game
Wolsey-Wessington 37, Highmore-Harrold 36

Wolsey-Wessington’s Chantel Haider hit a jumper with just over 30 seconds remaining and the basket turned out to be the game winner, as the Lady Warbirds took third place in the girl’s 281 Conference Tournament with a 37-36 win over the Highmore-Harrold Pirates.
It was a carbon copy of last year, when Haider hit a short jumper at the buzzer, to help the Lady Warbirds defeat the same Highmore-Harrold Pirate team 39-38.
The Lady Warbirds held a 20-11 lead at the half, but Highmore-Harrold rallied to cut the margin to three points, 33-30, after three points and carried the momentum into the final period. A 36-35 on a Pirate free throw set the stage for Haider’s heroics and triggered a Wolsey-Wessington celebration.
Lizzi Brandt led the Lady Warbirds, scoring 13 points and hauling down seven rebounds. Haider’s late score bumped her into double figures with 10 points.
Highmore-Harrold got 15 points from Oakley Jandreau, while Halle Tvedt led the rebounders with five boards.
Wolsey-Wessington, which improved to 5-4 with the win, will be back in action Saturday, when it hosts Potter County, while Highmore-Harrold, 5-6, is off until Thursday, when the Pirates host Lyman.
