HURON — The Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots earned their first win in the girls’ basketball 281 Conference Tournament, over last year’s defending champions, the Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks, 44-36.
“I was really proud of our defense, Sanborn Central-Woonsocket is a tough opponent and we’re happy to come out with the win,” said Kristi Smith, Patriots Coach.
The Patriots, now with eight wins and four losses on the season, took the lead early in the first quarter. The Blackhawks made a comeback in the second but did not catch up, as their record dropped to 6-5 on the season.
A 12-point lead late in the last quarter was the highest it got for the Lady Patriots, SCW did not go out without a battle and took some last minute points, which led HT to an eight point lead for the big win.
“Our senior, Tyler Schone had the best game she’s had all season. She was aggressive on offense and stepped up and played some big defense for us as well tonight,” Smith explained. “Overall it was a great team effort and that’s what did the job.”
Tyler Schone had a game-high 18 points for the Lady  Patriots, while Ally Binger followed with eight points. Elizabeth Salmen added six points and eight rebounds for the team.
Leading the Blackhawks was Abby Doering with 14 points and six rebounds. Megan Poyer also had six rebounds and added seven points.
The tournament champions will be back in action on Monday, when the Patriots will tangle with the Warner Monarchs, while the Blackhawks are set to travel to Alexandria on Tuesday to take on the Hanson Beaverettes.
