Leadership Huron plans ‘Stuff a Bus’ shoe drive for local children

HURON — The 2017 Leadership Huron class is looking for help to “Stuff the Bus”  with new or gently-used shoes for children from kindergarten through high school seniors in the local school district.
A hunting bus owned by Nathan Hofer will be parked between Wal-Mart and Shoe Sensation on Nov. 17 and 18, and everyone is encouraged to stop out and “stuff the bus” with shoes. Hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18.
“In working with the children in our community through different programs, I could see a need,” said Laurie Smith, a member of this year’s Leadership Huron class.
“I would see kids not wearing the proper shoes for the season, or their shoes were just torn and worn out,” she said.
Smith, who has helped with the Coats for Kids project for many years, said there were times they received a request for shoes as well.

“As I entered the Leadership Huron program, I knew that one community project I wanted to present to the group was a shoe drive,” Smith said. “I knew I wanted to help in some way by giving back.
“We are using our platform to give back to the youth of our community, which are our future leaders,” she added.
Shoe Sensations will offer a discount to shoppers who help the Leadership Huron class stuff the bus.
This is the first project for the 2017 Leadership Huron class.
“We’ve seen other communities do this and we just liked the idea,” said fellow classmate Jace Jungemann. “Hopefully, we can fill the bus.
“So many kids don’t go to school with the right shoes,” Jungemann added. “The more the community can come together the better.”
