MILLER ­— Leo Istas, 95, of Miller, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019, at Southridge Healthcare in Sioux Falls.
Funeral Mass will be 9 a.m., Thursday, June 27, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Miller. Burial with military honors will follow in G.A.R. Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday with a 7 p.m. celebration of life service, all at Reck Funeral Home in Miller.
Leo was born November 5, 1923, in Marshall, Minn. to Dora (LaPolice) and Charles Istas. He flew as a fighter pilot in the South Pacific in 1943, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery in battle. He opened Istas Miller Bakery in 1951, and the Driftwood Café in 1963. He was united in marriage to Delores (Deide) Gussler May 3, 1965. He was a member of St. Ann’s Church, the Knights of Columbus; American Legion, VFW Disabled Veterans of America, and Marine Corp League.
He is survived by his sister, Angie Nagy; daughters, Casandra (Stephen) Scales, and Tamara Enalls; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores; daughter, Sherri Istas; and five siblings.
