To the Editor:
I believe it is safe to say that there are very few individuals, businesses or organizations that were not affected in some way as a result of COVID-19. It is my opinion that nonprofit charitable organizations were no exception, because when individuals and businesses are struggling financially, they simply don’t have the funds to donate as they would in “normal” times.
The Beadle County Humane Society is a fine example.
Anyone who loves animals and supports this organization knows that a large portion of its income comes from fundraisers which are “social” events and could not be held during the pandemic. That being said, as an animal lover and advocate of the shelter, I decided to reach out to a friend and former colleague, who is a member of WindRiders ABATE, to see if they would consider doing some sort of fundraiser to help out the shelter.
My request was brought up at a monthly meeting and that was that. The club researched what the shelter’s most critical needs were and then took up a collection among the members to help fulfill those needs.
They filled a SUV with food and supplies that are so desperately needed 365 days a year. A photo of their efforts can be seen on the Beadle County Humane Society’s Facebook page.
Thank you WindRiders ABATE for caring and your generosity in taking the bull by the horns and chose to help those that can’t help themselves, along with all the other things you do for the Huron community.
