To the Editor:
In last week’s Plainsman, Holly Holm of Huron accused Democrats of attempting to overturn election results in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District and for trying to “pack” the U.S. Supreme Court. As National Committeeman for the South Dakota Democratic Party, I feel it necessary to comment on the accusations.
In the 2nd Congressional House race in Iowa between Democrat Rita Hart (D) and Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R), hundreds of thousands of votes were cast, resulting in a win for Miller-Meeks by 47 votes and then by six votes in a recount. The Hart campaign identified 22 ballots in her favor that were never counted and had obtained affidavits from many of the voters involved.
No voter should lose their right to vote because some poll workers forgot to run ballots through a machine. The Republican campaign of disinformation attacked the review of the closest congressional contest in 100 years, effectively silencing voter’s voices.
Are Republicans going to lecture Democrats that packing the courts threatens judicial independence? Republicans refused to allow a vote on President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee after Antonin Scalia’s death and packed the court with Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. In addition to filling every circuit court vacancy for the first time in 40 years.
When Obama was president, McConnell, and his party blocked the vast majority of Obama’s nominees. Republicans will continue to spread false information to raise money and generate further division. Please don’t fall for it.
