Library to begin 2023 summer reading program

The Library’s Summer Reading Program for all ages runs from June 5 – July 21.

Stop by the library to pick up your summer activity passports (birth–grade 12) and activity bookmarks (adults) to begin participating in summer library fun. As activities are completed, simply return bookmarks/passport pages to the library to be included in the summer prize drawings on June 12 and 26 and July 10 and 21.

The Summer Reading Kick-Off Party is scheduled for June 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Campbell Park. Absolute Science will have bubble stations and a mega foam blaster! This free event is open to all ages and encourages outdoor family foam fun! Additional summer reading program activities throughout the month include:

Kids’ Korner (Birth – 3rd grade):
• Mondays at 10 a.m. BabyJiggles for 2-year-olds and younger.
• Volunteers through United Way will read Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. at the library. Come back in the afternoon for crafts at 3 p.m. every Tuesday.
• Grab your beach towel on Wednesday and come for water games in the park south of the library at 1:30 p.m.
• Thursdays, kids can sign up to read to a librarian to help keep up with their literacy skills over the summer. Thursday afternoons come try a STEM activity at 2 p.m.

Friday mornings have a new biweekly program, Read & Play, for children ages 3 to 5! End your week on Friday afternoons in the Kids’ Korner playing either Bingo or board games. Don’t miss the Sioux Falls ZooMobile on June 22 at 10 a.m. at the Campus Center to see what animals the zoo brings! June 28 at 6:30 p.m. is Family Lego Night at the library where participants will complete some building challenges as a family.

Tweens / Teens (Grades 4 - 12):
Weekly crafts, STEM activities, an ice-cream book club, and outreach opportunities. Along with these programs are chances to cook, play active games, record the life stories of Seniors, and much more.

• June 3 is an all-day Next Level party for students entering into fourth grade to receive a tween card and students entering into sixth grade to receive a teen card. A treat will be served, students will switch to a new library card and they can enter their names into a drawing.
• June 16 from 8to 10p.m. the library is collaborating with Splash Central for a Middle School night of fun, pizza, an outdoor movie, and prizes at Splash Central. This event is for students going into grades 6 - 8. Attendees will need a pool pass or $5 for admission.

Adults:
Friends can join in the southeast corner of the library for a time of coffee and discussion with Mark’s Coffee Corner —Monday through Friday from 2 to 4 p.m.

• June 5 at 1 and 6 p.m. Monday Movies will be showing “A Letter to Three Wives” (1949). Runtime is 1 hour 43 minutes and snacks will be provided.
• June 6, 13, and 20 at 11 a.m. are Adult Yoga classes intended for beginners and led by Susan Fleck. Space is limited and registration is required for each class.

• June 12 at 1 and 6 p.m. adult crafters will be making patriotic fringe flags. Registration is required.
• Murder Mystery Summer Book Club – June 15 and 29 at 6 p.m. The group will meet twice a month throughout the summer to talk about strategy, discuss discoveries, and offer possible conclusions. Six murders. One hundred pages. Millions of possible combinations... but only one is correct. Can you solve Torquemada’s murder mystery?
• June 24 at 1p.m. New York Times best-selling novelist and award-winning Amish romance author, Wanda Brunstetter, will join the Huron Public Library over ZOOM for an author talk and Q&A! Brunstetter will discuss her inspiration for writing and her experience with visiting Amish communities around the country. • June 26 at 6:30 p.m. Celtic guitarist, Jerry Barlow, returns to the library with music and stories from a time when there were “Warriors, Wizards, Castles and Kings.” The stories behind the music are historical in nature, embellished by local legend and lore. There will be ample opportunity for some toe-tapping, some sing-along and even some step-dancing if you are so inclined.

• Mystery Book Club – June 8 at 5:30 p.m. discussing “The Christie Affair” by Nina de Gramont.
• Around-the-World Book Club – June 15 at noon discussing “My Brilliant Friend” by Elena Ferrante
• Huron Area Senior Center Book Club – June 16 at 10:15 am at the senior center discussing “This Time Tomorrow” by Emma Straub
