HURON — Two members of the James River Writers recently read their entries at the South Dakota State Fair and displayed their ribbons to other members of their local writing group.
Sallianne Hines earned a first place and a Best in Show for her poem “Cinnamon and Lace,” a first for her human interest story “Angel on Board,” and second place ribbons for her poems “Day of the Enemy,” “In Search of Lightness,” and “If I Had Known.” She writes poetry, essays, nonfiction articles and books, online content, and has completed two novels.
Chicken Soup for the Soul also just published her story, “Angel on Board,” in its most recent book “Dreams and the Unexplainable.”

Hines will be the guest author/speaker and will sign books Thursady at 7 p.m. at the Huron Library as part of its series “Authors Among Us.”
Jim Schmidt earned first place in amateur poetry for his poems “Walking Through the Seasons,” and “Taking It All In.” He also received second place for a Haiku called, “The Storm.” His article, “Walking the Mickelson Trail,” appeared in South Dakota Magazine and a small article has recently been accepted for publication in Living Well, the South Dakota chiropractic magazine. His short story “Learning the Hard Way” was published in the South Dakota anthology, “Corncob Fuel and Cold Prairie Winters.”
Other members of the James River Writers are working on a variety of projects including novels (historic, women’s fiction, romance, epistolary, science fiction, fantasy, and horror), short stories, essays, poetry and humor.
All those interested in writing and publishing are invited to attend meetings at the Huron Public Library on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 4 p.m. The group is free and sponsored by the Huron Public Library. Call Bill Russell (352-5113) or Sallianne Hines (354-1921) for more information.
