Lower Brule claims DOC boys' championship

HURON – The final game of the 2023 Dakota Oyate Challenge was rather anticlimactic as the Lower Brule Sioux jumped out early and ran away with the boys’ championship game 70-49 over the Crazy Horse Chiefs Saturday night.

Brian LaRoche Jr led the Sioux, ranked fourth in the most recent Class “B” poll, with 23 points. EJ Langdeau and Tate Elk Soldier each tossed in 14 points. Lane Gray added 13 points for Lower Brule, who moves to 12-3.

Crazy Horse falls to 10-4 despite a game-high 24 points from Noah Iron Horse. Hyden Martin added 14 points for the Chiefs.

HURON – The Marty Braves held off a second-half surge from the Omaha Nation Chiefs to secure third place in the boys’ 2023 Dakota Oyate Challenge with a 60-52 win Saturday at Huron Arena.

Benicio Zephier paced the Braves with 23 points. Terrill Rave and Greg Zephier each added 10 points for Marty, now 6-5.

Keiyan Parker led a balanced attack for the Chiefs with 14 points.

The Tiospaye Topa Thunderhawks held off a determined effort by the Wakpala Chiefs, 60-59, Saturday afternoon, to claim the consolation championship at the Dakota Oyate Challenge boys’ basketball tournament.

Kristapher Meeter led all scorers in the game with 34 points for the Thunderhawks, who improve to 9-3 with the win. Dennis Sand III added 11 and Kaden Rousseau chipped in 10 for Tiospaye Topa.

Zachary Moran led a balanced scoring effort for Wakpala with 13 points, while Jacob Moran added 12 and Antoine Mellotte netted 10.

Senior Malik Longie of the Flandreau Indian School went off for 53 points Saturday morning, leading the Indians to a 91-54 pounding of the Takini Skyhawks in the seventh-place game of the Dakota Oyate Challenge boys’ basketball tournament at Huron Arena.

Longie nearly outscored the Skyhawks single handed, although Litrell Brother of All added 21 points and Lavelle Fights Over chipped in 10 as FIS improves to 2-6.

Takini, which falls to 1-11 with the loss, got 17 points from Redik Curley and a dozen from Logan Quilt in the loss.
