MILLER — With added prize money on the line, David McDonald of Huron cruised to the win in the WISSOTA late model main event on Saturday at Miller Central Speedway.
McDonald, who started on the outside of the front row, snagged the lead on the opening lap and led the duration of the feature event to earn his fifth win at the speedway.
While McDonald had a secure hold on the top spot, the most heated battle in the late model main event was for the second spot. Josh Skorczewski of Aberdeen, who started seventh, capitalized on restart early in the race, and was able to hold off Curt Gelling of Aberdeen and Brian Diede of Huron to claim the runner-up finish.
Chad Becker of Aberdeen, who experienced mechanical issues in his heat race, rounded out the top-five in the 13-car field.
David McDonald was the second member of his family to record a feature win on Saturday, as two races earlier his son, Tyler, powered his way to victory in the WISSOTA modified main event.
After getting off to a rocky start at the drop of the green flag, McDonald received a chance to redeem himself as the six cars were regrouped following a caution on the opening lap.
The second chance went a lot better. McDonald moved to the front from his second row starting spot and brought his brother-in-law Alex Guthmiller of Huron, who also started in the second row, with him to the front.
McDonald prevailed for the lead and held off Guthmiller for the 10th feature win of his career at Miller Central Speedway. Mike Stearns of Hecla, who went over the top of the track in turn three to cause the caution on the opening lap, regrouped to finish third, while David Carlson of Huron was fourth and Dale Ames of Huron was fifth.
After experiencing mechanical issues in his heat race, Cole Searing of Huron started at the back of the 11-car field for the WISSOTA super stock feature race. He worked his way up into the top half of the field before being flagged for bringing out the caution and being sent to the back of the field again.
Despite the loss of position Searing still had plenty of time to work his way back to the front. He worked his way past nine cars, but couldn’t catch Taylor Schmidt of Bath, who led a majority of the race to secure his third win of the season.
Searing was second, followed by Jeremy North of Huron, Cody Martin of Mitchell and Kipp DeGroot of Platte.
The win in the WISSOTA Midwest modified main event was decided by a matter of inches, as Lane Johnson of Miller held off a strong challenge by Cory Berquist of Huron coming out of the final turn on the final lap. It was Johnson’s third feature win on his hometown track.
Tailing Berquist across the finish line for third was Lane’s father, Lorin. Jayne Peterson of Highmore was fourth, followed by Tanner Zweifel of Watertown.
Zach Pollock of Miller led from start to finish but had to hold off Broc Stout of Winner at the flagstand to claim his second feature race in the street stock division.
Stout was second, followed by Luke Johnson of Miller, Cole Phillips of Winner and Michael Bogh of Huron.
After recording her first-ever feature win a week early, it appeared a second might be in order for Destrie Morris of Miller on Saturday as she led the first four laps of the pure stock main event.
A spin in turn four by Jordan Rawstern of Blunt collected Trevor Ryan of Highmore in a head-on meeting. Despite significant cosmetic damage to his car, Rawstern would be able to continue and eventually challenge Mike Hammill of Miller for the win.
Hammill inherited the lead on a restart after Morris spun on the back stretch following a previous restart.
