McGirr tabbed as new president and CEO of GHDC

HURON – David McGirr, a long-time business entrepreneur and former mayor and city commissioner, has been elected president and chief executive officer of Greater Huron Development Corporation.
He will succeed Jim Borszich in the position on Jan. 1.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to help move Huron forward,” McGirr said in an interview. “It’s been a passion of mine ever since I moved here.”
A native of Wessington, McGirr and his wife, Linda, purchased Creative Printing and moved to Huron 27 years ago.
He will join GHDC on Nov. 1 and work with Borszich during a two-month transition period.
In many ways, serving as a former city commissioner, mayor and business owner and working in economic development has brought him to this point, he said.
“It feels like it’s the right position at the right time,” McGirr said.

GHDC Board Chairman Sherman Gose thanked Borszich on behalf of the full board for the work he has done for the past 12 years.
He said members had some very good candidates to interview for the position. There were four really good interviews of individuals from town and from out of town, Gose said.
“We’re excited about what’s going on in Huron right now and look forward to working with David to keep Huron progressing,” he said.
He said the fact that the city has so much going on helped to attract more quality candidates for the development corporation job.
McGirr was owner/operator of aviation, printing, marketing, agricultural and property management companies during his career. He sold his business interests in 2014 and focused on business and economic development consulting.
In 2015, he accepted a position as vice president of AgSense, and was later promoted to president of the international technology company.
He served 15 years as a Huron mayor and city commissioner, where he worked to promote economic development, post-secondary education and public works projects.
McGirr remains active in community service, including 11 years on the Huron Regional Medical Center Board of Directors, four of those years as board chairman.
He also currently serves on the boards of the Huron University Foundation, Huron Community Foundation and the South Dakota Corrections Commission.
He said he is excited to get up to speed on all of the projects under way in Huron.
A strategic planning session with the board is likely after the first of the year to take into account all that has been going on and to meld everything into a plan for growth in the next five to 10 years, he said.
