Meetings held on future downtown construction

HURON — David Locke of Stockwell Engineering led three meetings throughout the afternoon Tuesday for stakeholders within the community and one public meeting Tuesday evening to discuss potential options for downtown improvements alongside the Highway 37 construction that will be done through Huron’s downtown area in 2024.

Many in attendance had questions regarding the trees that line Dakota Avenue, and Locke explained that the trees in the right of way would be removed but that they could be replanted following construction. Locke also explained that many of the trees lining Dakota Ave. currently would likely require removal due to the Emerald ash borer, and he encouraged a more diverse grouping of trees planted in the area between 5th Street and 9th Street.

The primary focus of discussion was potential design options in the area between Market Street and 5th Street. The Department of Transportation determined after public meetings earlier this year that this portion of downtown will be constructed with a three-lane design, utilizing one northbound lane, one southbound lane, and one dedicated turning lane.

Locke stated that no specific designs were to be presented Tuesday, but that the meetings with stakeholders and the public were to gather input that will be used for a design from Stockwell that will be presented in January. Those who attended meetings were given a survey to fill out as well after the presentation.
