HURON — Melva Carlson, 95, of Huron, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at the SunQuest Healthcare Center.
Her funeral service will be 11a.m., Monday, April 24, at the First United Methodist Church.  Burial will be in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Kuhler Funeral Home with her family present from 5 to 7 p.m.  A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Kuhler Funeral Home.
Melva Petersen was born November 6, 1921, at Huron to Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Mary Welty) Petersen. She grew to adulthood in the Sheffield and Huron community. She attended rural school near Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1940. Melva then attended Huron College of Commerce.
On May 22, 1948, Melva married Hugh Carlson at Huron. They started their life together in Huron, then moved to Great Falls, Montana, and later moved back to Huron.
Melva was employed at the Standard Oil until they moved their office to Minneapolis, Minn. She was later employed at Magness Livestock, Armour and Company, and Swift and Company until her retirement in 1987.
She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church and the Huron Social Club. Melva was a huge Elvis Presley fan, and followed the Minnesota Twins baseball team. “Gran and the girls” never seemed to sit still for very long and were tied at the hip.  They enjoyed each other’s company and liked traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada, Florida and Texas together.
Grateful for having shared her life are one daughter and her husband, Kim and Danny Helseth of Rapid City; one son-in-law and his wife, Marlen and Sandi Winter of St. Lawrence; two granddaughters and their husbands, Jennifer and Mike DeBoer of Huron and Heather and Dan Werdel of Pierre; one sister and her husband, Lois and Ted Peterman of Huron; two nieces and their husbands, Candy and Dale Guthmiller of Wolsey and Vickie and Dennis Rans of New Caney, Texas; and one cousin, Rita Ellis of Minneapolis, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary; her husband, Hugh, in 1996; one daughter, Cindy in 1991; one sister, Vivian Toelle in 2015; one nephew, Doug Toelle in 2001; one great-nephew, Trisdan Rans in 1989; and one cousin, Eloise Kubitza in 2010.
