WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Melvin A. Baumgart, 78, of Wessington Springs, passed away suddenly, Thursday May 17, 2018, at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center ER.  
The Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday May 25, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wessington Springs. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church with a scripture service at 7 p.m.
Melvin was born January 15, 1940, in Stickney to August and Alice (Dickson) Baumgart. He was united in marriage to Judy May Sprague November 7, 1958. The couple settled down on a farm near Alpena in 1970 where they farmed until retiring and moving to Wessington Springs.
He was an avid conversationalist and enjoyed visiting with everyone. He enjoyed fishing and had a love for horses, riding whenever he could in the 4th of July parade and on trail rides in Wessington Springs.  
He is survived by his wife, Judy; children, Donald Baumgart of Alpena, Brenda (Brent) Baumgart of Sioux Falls, Carmen (Brad) Hillman of Baltic, and Jeffrey (Jaleen) Baumgart of Las Vegas, Nev.; siblings, Irene Hohn, Karen Berg, Denny, DeWayne (Wink), and Dale Baumgart; 12 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Randy; his  parents; siblings, Leonard Baumgart, Dee Smith, Rosella Nielson, Ruthie Spitzer, Verna Stindtman, Betty Kurtenbach, and Sharon Kendall.
