LAKE PRESTON — Melvin J. Ness, 84 of Lake Preston, passed away Monday, May 27, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Society in Howard.
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 13, at the United Church of Christ in Lake Preston with a lunch following. Burial will be 3 p.m. in the Spring Hills Cemetery at Gann Valley. Cake and coffee will be served at the Gann Valley Fire Hall following the burial.
Melvin Jean Ness was born February 18, 1935, in Charles Mix County to Neil and Mildred (Fralick) Ness. He served in the U.S. Navy on an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea. He had been the publisher of the Gann Valley Chief Newspaper and had worked for the Arlington Sun and the Lake Preston Times. He had been a Mason for 55 years, a member of the American Legion for 41 years, and the UCC/UMC Church in Lake Preston. He was united in marriage to LaVonne Brown in 1985, and together they managed Mel’s Diner Cafe in Lake Preston.
He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Linda Ness, and Deanne Ness; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVonne; siblings, Odin, Einar, LeRoy, Lyle, and Neva; and sister-in-law, Phyllis.
