Miller Central Speedway attracts record field of cars

Posted

It was a cool but pleasant night at the Miller Central Speedway. The largest crowd of the year so far saw a record field of 94 cars on hand.

The night was sponsored by Brueggeman Crop Services.

The Pump N Pak Pure Stocks led off the features, with Aaron Holan taking the lead on the start. As they came around to turn four, Holan lost his right rear wheel and spun in front of the field. Mike Hammill and Cody Songer made minor contact, but both restarted. Hammill would later drop out from a flat tire. Hammill did lead the first two laps before teenager Wyatt Brooker took command and won his very first feature race over Jayden Michaelson, Brenden Rassel, Songer, and Russel Hoffer.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were next, with Kyle Bertram leading the first two laps before spinning by himself in turn four. He was sent to the rear, with James Hoing taking over on the restart and leading all the way over Andy Rossow, Bertram, (who made it back to third without any more yellows), Trajan Schmidt and Broc Stout. It was Hoing’s fourth feature win at the Miller Central Speedway.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds rolled out 23 strong, with James Reiner leading the first lap, then point leader Brock Gronwold moved from 8th to the lead in two laps, just like Friday night. This time he outran Cole Searing for the win, followed by Mike Nichols, Adam Brotherton and Tracy Johnson. It was Gronwold’s second feature in at the track.

The WISSOTA Modifieds had a flag to flag feature, with Dylan Zabel leading the first lap before Showtime Kent Arment blew by and ran away with the win. Zabel held second in the strong field followedby Mike Stearns, Nick Wranek and Alex Guthmiller. It was Arment’s 18th Mod feature win at the track.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks had a big field, with Jason Cook leading the first seven laps until Cole Searing blew by for his customary win, followed by Kelly Duffy, Jeremy North, Cook and Casey Hanson. It was Searing’s 48th feature win in the Supers.

The WISSOTA Late Models rolled out 16 strong, with Dustin Arthur leading the first lap before Josh Skorczewski took command. On lap 14 Kent Arment took the lead before an incident in traffic on the front straightaway almost put Scott Ward on his lid. The lap wasn’t completed so Josh was back in front. On the restart Curt Kranz and Ward blew past Arment, and went by Skorczewski a lap later. Kranz led lap 16, then Ward led to the white flag and Kranz got him back coming off of tun four at the checkers. They were followed by Skorczewski, David Carlson and Cole Schill. It was Kranz’s first win at Miller, his first in a Late Model and his first in South Dakota since he won in a Street Stock at Watertown on Aug.  22, 1999

This weekend is regular racing in all classes, with the Tri-State Late Models coming on Saturday June 13. There were 3 extra Late Models this week tuning up for the Tri-State race, and there will probably be more this week. Starting time is 7 p.m.

Friday
It was a cool cloudy night at the Miller Central Speedway, with 68 cars in the pits. The evening was sponsored by Agtegra Cooperative.

The features rolled off with the Pump N Pak Pure Stocks going first. Doug Songer led the first five before Jayden Michaelson moved past for the win. It was Michaelson’s seventh feature win at Miller, tying him for 8th with Michael Hammill in the Pure Stocks. Brenden Rassel, Wyatt Brooker, Destrie Morris and Curtis Johnson rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks put on another great race with Travis Oxandaburu leading the first two laps before Trajan Schmidt took command. Broc Stout closed in and made the winning pass on the outside coming out of turn four at the checkers over Schmidt, Oxandaburu, Chris Serr and Spence Pollock. It was Broc’s 30th Street Stock feature win, leaving him just one win short of the record held by Blayne Baloun. It was his second last lap win in a row.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were next, with Jaymie Peterson leading the first lap before 8th starting Brock Gronwold came out of nowhere to lead the second lap. Cole Searing broke out of traffic a few laps later and ran down Gronwold at the halfway point and ran off to his eighth feature win in the class over Gronwold, Adam Brotherton, Darren Engesser and Peterson.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were next with Kent Arment leading flag to flag over Alex Guthmiller, Trevor Anderson, Matt Gilbertson and Nick Wranek. It was Kent’s 17th feature win in the Modifieds.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks rolled out a short field with Austin Arbogast leading the first lap before Cole Searing powered past winning his 46th Super Stock feature over Casey Hanson, Matt Johnson, Arbogast and Trent Brutger.

The WISSOTA Late Models put on the race of the night with Lyndon Bolt leading the first 11 laps before Josh Skorczewski pinned him behind a lapped car. Kent Arment quickly got around Bolt and spent the rest of the race snapping at Skorczewski’s heels over Chad Becker, Bolt and Cole Schill. It was Skorczewski’s ninth feature win, breaking a five way tie and putting him in sole possession of sixth on the win list.
