Miller Central Speedway opens season with twinbill

MILLER — The season finally started Friday night in the cool and damp. The night was sponsored by Quion Financial and there were 67 cars in the pits. The wet conditions resulted in a super tacky hammer down track with passing at a premium.

The Pump N Pak Pure Stocks were the first out for the features, with Russel Hoffer leading the first two laps before Jayden Michaelsohn passed him on the outside. But Hoffer stayed with him all the way to the finish for his best finish ever at Miller. Brenden Rassel, Wyatt Brooker and Cody Songer rounded out the top five. It was Jayden’s fifth feature win at the Miller Central Speedway.

In the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, James Hoing drew the pole on the redraw and ran away to his third career win over Broc Stout, Kyle Bertram, Trajan Schmidt and Clifford Houser.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were up next. With Minnesota not racing, several Minnesota cars came for the doublehader. The 2008 WISSOTA 100 Midwest Modified Champion Brock Gronwold, on the outside pole, won the race to turn one and led all the way in a flag to flag feature. Cole Searing chased him through the lapped cars but couldn’t catch Brock, who won his first feature at Miller, with Justin Froemming, Mike Nichols and Corey Storck completing the top five.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were next on the still tacky track with Jayson Good leading all the way over Dale Ames, Mike Stearns and Arne Anderson. It was Jayson’s fourth win at the track, moving him into fifth place on the feature win list.

In the WISSOTA Super Stocks Cole Searing won over Casey Hanson, Kelly Duffy and Kipp DeGroot. It was Cole’s 44th feature win in the Super Stocks.

The WISSOTA Late Models had a tough time passing as well, with Chad Becker leading all the way over Cole Schill, Kelly Duffy, Curt Kranz and David Carlson. It was Chad’s 17th feature win, breaking a tie with Denny Selting for second place on the list behind the late, great Sheldon Reding’s total of 58.

Saturday
The Pump N Pak Pure Stocks were up first, with Trevor Ryan leading the first two laps before giving way to Jayden Michaelsohn, who won for the second night in a row and the sixth time overall over Brenden Rassel, Wyatt Brooker, Curtis Johnson and Destrie Morris.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks put on a good show, as Trajan Schmidt led the first lap before Broc Stout took command. There was a yellow with 2 laps to go when Dominick Havard spun in turn four and got hit in the left rear wheel by Alan Malsam. Both cars were out, and Havard went off on the hook with major rear suspension damage.

This set up green, white, checker finish with 2019 WISSOTA National Champion Justin Vogel getting the jump on Stout on the restart and was leading at the white flag. Stout didn’t give up and repassed Vogel on the outside for the win, with James Hoing, Chris Serr and Clifford Houser rounding out the top five. It was Brock’s 29th feature win at the speedway.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds rolled out 22 strong, with Adam Brotherton leading the first lap before Corey Storck took the lead. Storck was he chased down by Brock Gronwold and Cole Searing. With 10 laps complete there was a yellow for a spin by Devon Carroll in turn one. On the restart they made it to turn four before Searing accidently tapped Gronwold, spinning him and several other cars spun to miss Gronwold and each other. Searing was sent to the rear.

On the restart Gronwold got the jump on Storck and took the lead for a lap, but Storck got it back in a lap and won over Gronwold, Mike Nichols, Tracy Johnson and Shane Howell. It was Corey’s first win at Miller, and the first win in South Dakota for a member of the Storck family since his grandfather Dave won at Aberdeen in 1988.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks were next, with Friday night’s winner Cole Searing starting fifth but leading the first lap at the bottom of a three-wide group with Kelly Duffy and Casey Hanson. Searing lead all the way over Duffy, Hanson, Taylor Schmidt and Kipp DeGroot. It was Cole’s 45th Super Stock win at the speedway.

Mike Stearns was unbeatable all night in the WISSOTA Modifieds, leading all the way over Shane Howell, Alex Guthmiller, Tony Konold and Trevor Anderson. Guthmiller spun early and came from the rear and had been second at one point until Howell passed him late. It was Mike’s 6th feature win in the Modifieds at Miller.

The WISSOTA Late Models were the grand finale with Josh Skorczewski leading the first four laps before North Dakota invader Cole Schill took the lead. Chad Becker eventually broke out of traffic but was too far behind until Roger Bitz got crowded over the inside marker tire in turn one by two cars above him. He spun, but made an incredible save and kept going, but the yellow came out, putting the rest of the field on Schill’s bumper.

On the restart Becker could stay with Schill, but didn’t have enough speed to make the pass. The top five was Schill, Becker, Skorczewski, Kent Arment and David Carlson. It was Cole’s first feature win at the Miller Central Speedway.
There will be racing this Saturday, with a starting time of 7:00 PM.
