Miller claims 2021 Class B Boys' CC title

SIOUX FALLS — Led by freshman Pierce Baumberger and sophomore Alex Schumacher, the Miller boys’ cross country team won the Class B championship during the State Meet, which was held Saturday at Yankton Trail Park.

The Rustlers had three of their runners finish inside the top 25 in the 116-runner field, which earned them all-state honors. They finished with a winning total of 25 in the field team standings.

“Our boys capped off an undefeated season,” Miller coach Tom McGough said. “I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Northwestern was second in the final boys’ standing with 48, while Freeman Academy/Mario was third in the 17-team field at 51.

Rounding out the top five were Philip at 56 and Kimball/White Lake at 58.

James Valley Christian was seventh at 84.

Sophomore Lane Krautschun of Bison won the Class B boys’ race with a 16:35.82, while junior Josiah Schroeder of Canistota was second at 16:53.81.

Baumberger and Schumacher were third and fourth, respectively, for the Rustlers with times of 16:58.52 and 17:14.13.

Sophomore Nicholas Schlachter of Potter County rounded out the top five at 17:17.71.

Senior Daniel Ayoroa of JVC was seventh at 17:27.99, while junior Dawson Hale of Highmore-Harrold was 13th at 17:52.23.

Senior Caden Gormaker also earned all-state honors for Miller, finishing 24th at 18:08.33.

AJ Neely of Wessington Springs finished just outside the top 25 with an 18:13.75, which put him 28th in the final race of his high school career.

Freshman Kellan Hurd and seventh-grader Tyson Kindle were No. 29 and 33, respectively, for Miller at 18:28.90 and 18:38.26.

Eighth-grader Dax Frandsen of JVC was 41st at 18:44.04, while junior David Stagg of Highmore-Harrold was 49th at 19:04.24 and junior Tobias Arbeiter of Iroquois/Doland was 66th at 19:23.43.

Eighth-grader Autumn Fallis of Highmore-Harrold challenged for the win in the Class B girls’ race. She finished fifth with a time of 19:59.20. Four of the top five finishers were eighth-graders.

Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern won the Class B girls’ race in 19:39.44, while Autumn Baker of Kimball/White Lake was second at 19:41.58 and Kaelyn Ulschmid of Arlington was third at 19:53.29.

Junior Jada Koerner of Freeman Academy/Marion, who was the upperclassman of the top five, was fourth at 19:58.57.

Junior Abby Hasart of James Valley Christian earned all-state honors, finishing 13th at 20:34.58.

Senior Payton Fox of Sunshine Bible Academy and freshman Madeline Nye of Miller were No. 36 and 37, respectively, in the 115-runner field with times of 21:38.91 and 21:39.25.

Senior AbbyKate Hamilton of JVC was 42nd at 21:45.40, while teammates Rhayonna Hood (sophomore) and Hadasah Olson (seventh-grader) were No. 45 and 47, respectively, with times of 21:48.29 and 21:48.64.

Eighth-grader Kendal Uttecht of Wolsey-Wessington was 48th at 21:50.51 .

Iroquois/Doland junior Avery Miles was 68th at 22:29.34, followed by Miller eighth-grader Gabby Werdel at 22:33.70. Ella Johnson of Hitchcock-Tulare was 72nd at 22:41.32, while eighth-grader Aubree Blue of De Smet was 73rd at 22:45.91.

Kimball/White Lake repeated as the Class B girls’ champion with 26 points, which was just three points better than second-place Potter County. Aberdeen Christian was third at 44, followed by Ipswich at 45 and Arlington at 63.

James Valley Christian was seventh at 81.
