Mitchell holds on for ESD win against Tigers

HURON — On a night when only four of the 14 matches went the full six minutes, the Mitchell Kernels pulled out a 43-30 win over the Huron Tigers in ESD wrestling action at Huron Arena.
The Kernels were gifted 12 points, as Huron was open at both 106 and 113 pounds, and Mitchell also earned pin-falls in four additional matches in the dual.
“Overall, I thought we wrestled pretty well tonight,” Huron coach Dan McCarty said. “We juggled the lineup a little and with the open weights I knew we’d need to get lucky in a couple matches to pull out the win. We got close but it slipped away.”
Perhaps the best match of the night - and one that thankfully went the distance - was the final one, as Huron’s Sebastian Cardonna, ranked eighth in the state, squared off with fellow sophomore Wyatt Winter of Mitchell. Cardonna forced the action for most of the match, although the Kernel grappler was just a touch quicker, holding a 7-2 lead after two periods. Cardonna started down for the final period and Cardonna immediately got a reversal. After a Winter takedown and a Cardonna escape, the score was 9-5 in favor of the Kernel wrestler.
Then things changed in a blink.
“Sebastian won with his offense tonight,” said McCarty. “He got in deep a couple times, but the Mitchell kid ended up scoring points off his attempt when Sebastian didn’t finish the move. He got in deep at the end of the match and finished and it turned out.”
What Cardonna did was get a good solid takedown with about 20 seconds to go and as the wrestlers went to the mat he kept up pressure and Winter landed on his back. Cardonna nearly recorded the pin, but settled for a last second near-fall and the 10-9 decision.
Chipper Shillingstad for the Tigers and Logan Sparks went toe-to-toe for most of the match. Shillingstad never trailed, getting the early takedown and controlling the score. A late escape by Sparks made it 5-2 in favor of Shillingstad as the second period came to a close.
Shillingstad got another takedown early in the final period and led 7-3 as the match wound down, then, in the blink of an eye, the Tiger senior executed a takedown and rolled Sparks over, recording the pin at literally the very last second, at the 5:59 mark.
“Chipper got hurt with that move in Rapid City last weekend,” McCarty noted, “but figured out how to defend it; then used it tonight for the pin.”
An injury to Matt Katz, the regular Tiger 160-pounder, forced a bit of a lineup shuffle. Tyson Lien moved into Katz’s 160-pound slot and earned a hard-fought 9-3 decision over Joe VanOvershelde. Lien came close to sticking the Mitchell wrestler in the second period, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead that he never relinquished.
Frank Hines stepped in at 170 pounds and the Huron senior took Mitchell sophomore Tate Ellwein to school, getting a quick takedown and immediately working into a pinning combination, as he stuck the Kernel in only 56 seconds.
Huron’s Cole Ochsner also earned a tough win, pinning Trent Bientema in 1:54 for a win at 126.
“Tyson is so coachable,” McCarty said. “He worked really hard tonight against his kid and nearly had him beat. Last weekend in Rapid City Cole really started to wrestle like we knew he could and he continued that tonight. Frank did a lot of good things last weekend in Rapid City and he continued his run tonight. He really went after it and got the quick pin.”
Huron’s Gabe Rieger, the regular 195-pounder, dropped to the 182 weight class and completely controlled Mitchell’s Blake Fredericks. Rieger led 5-0 after the first period and pinned Fredericks at the 2:36 mark.
Huron is on the road tonight, traveling to Yankton to grapple with the Bucks, then will host Brandon Valley next Thursday at Huron Arena, to wrap up the 2018 part of its schedule.
