Local groups organize murder mystery fundraising events

HURON — The community has come together with the concept of Murder Mysteries, clues and compelling stories, where the public is invited to get to the bottom of what the mysteries have to reveal.
Boy Scout Troop 222 is set to host a murder mystery dinner and theater event, with the theme “Robin Hood and his Merry Murder,” which will take place at 6 p.m., Saturday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
The following week, the Huron Public Library has arranged a Mardi Gras themed Murder Mystery evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16.

Robin Hood’s

Merry Murder
“The stage is set in the Sherwood Forest of the Medieval times,” explained organizer Melissa Machtemes. “Robin Hood and his friends are setting up a dinner for a big festival, but before the festival takes place someone is found dead, so Robin Hood and his friends are in search of who committed the murder and why.”
Seven characters will be acted out by scouts in play form, plus ten scouts and families will help run everything behind the scenes, such as cooking, serving and waiting.
“We’re going with soups and stews - things that they may have had to eat during medieval times,” explained Machtemes. “The meal is broken up throughout the night, the dinner courses will be served in between acts before the big reveal at the end.”
This will be the second year that the group has organized a murder mystery performance and the plan is to continue it as an annual event.  All of the proceeds from the play will go toward Scouts attending Florida Seabase and the annual summer camp trip, which will be held at Many Point, Minn., this year. Seabase is a year-round camp based in the Florida Keys, where six Scouts and two adults will go to learn activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing.
“We had a nice turn out last year, it was a lot of fun and the guests really enjoyed the entertainment,” Machtemes said. “We would like to continue this as an annual event as long as we continue to get support from the community to participate. Without the community’s support we can’t have a play.”

Mardi Gras Murder Mystery
The murder mystery the following week at the library is more of an audience participation event
“I have parts for eight people and we can accept twelve, so we will have four people shadow,” said organizer Angela Bailey. “When they sign up they will receive an invitation that will give them their character and what they should dress like.”
The evening will be acted out and accompanied by a meal with adult beverages. It will also be the first adult murder mystery themed night the Library will host, after the success of the teen murder mystery evenings it has held in the past.
“We are going to shoot for two or three adult Murder Mystery nights a year,” explained Bailey.
