No. 1 Harrisburg handles Huron in Tiger Bowl


HARRISBURG — Harrisburg showed why it is the No. 1-ranked Class 11AA football team in the state on Saturday with a 49-0 victory against Huron in the Tiger Bowl.
Harrisburg scored on four of its first six possessions to open a 28-0 lead in the first half.
“We struggled to get anything done on either side of the ball,” Huron coach Michael Schmitz said.
Harrisburg’s explosive running back, Jack Anderson, put the first points on the board with a 61-yard touchdown. Quarterback Hunter Headlee boosted the lead to 14-0 before the end of the opening quarter on an 8-yard touchdown run.
Following his second touchdown run of 51 yards in the second quarter, Anderson had already amassed 165 yards rushing on nine carries for Harrisburg.
A bad snap on a punt during the ensuing possession for Huron, set Harrisburg up for its next scoring opportunity.
With a short field, Jhei Roewart was able to score on a 21-yard run with 1:55 remaining in the first half to make it 28-0.
Anderson added to his total with an 8-yard touchdown run to open the scoring in the third quarter. He then capped the scoring for the game with his fourth touchdown on a 12-yard run.
Sandwiched in between the two touchdowns by Anderson in the third quarter was a defensive touchdown by Cole Teigen on 10-yard fumble return.
Anderson would finish the game with 234 yards rushing on 16 carries to account for more than half of Harrisburg’s total offense of 429 in the game. Headlee added 58 yards on seven carries and was 4 of 10 passing for 37 yards with a pair of interceptions.
Huron managed just 169 yards of total offense in the game, with 137 of those coming on the ground.
Quarterback Jett McGirr led Huron with five carries for 28 yards. Matthew Katz and Zach Siemonsma finished with 17 and 16 yards rushing, respectively.
McGirr also was 4 of 13 passing for 34 yards and a pair of interceptions. Chipper Shillingstad snagged one catch for 17 yards.
Harrisburg improved to 1-1, while Huron dropped to 1-2.
Huron, which is ranked fifth in Class 11AA, will return home to host third-ranked Pierre at 7 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium.
