No 4 Sioux Valley edges No 1 De Smet in state-ranked matchup

VOLGA — The fourth-ranked team in Class A handed the top-ranked team in Class B its first loss of the season on Thursday.

Sioux Valley held off a late charge by De Smet to escape with a 54-50 victory.

“It was a disappointing loss tonight on the road. We settled for too many shots behind the three-point line,” De Smet coach Jeff Gruenhagen said. “I’m proud of these guys for battling back to have a chance to tie at the end.

“Cody Cavanaugh hit a huge 3 to get us within two at 52-50 and then forced a 5-second call to get us the ball back,” he said. “He finished with 11 points and six assists. It was a great all-around game from him tonight.”

After holding a 19-17 edge at the end of the opening quarter, the Bulldogs clung to a 32-30 advantage at the half.

“We had a chance to extend our lead a couple times in the first half, but they seemed to keep the momentum,” Gruenhagen said. “I thought our D was good and put them deep into the shot clock many times, but they hit some tough shots.”

The Cossacks snagged the lead in the third quarter and led 47-41 heading into the final quarter.

Oliver Vincent had 19 points to lead three players in double figures for Sioux Valley, which improved to 6-0. Parker Puetz and Hayden Ruesink each had 11 points.

Ruesink also had a team-high 10 rebounds for the Cossacks. Vincent led the way with four assists and three steals.

Kalen Garry had a game-high 20 points to lead De Smet, which is now 4-1. Tory Holland and Cody Cavanaugh added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Holland had eight rebounds for the Bulldogs, while Cavanaugh had four assists and Garry had three steals.

Both teams return to action today at the Pentagon Heritage Classic in Sioux Falls. De Smet plays Viborg-Hurley at 8 p.m., followed by Sioux Valley vs. Tea Area at 9:30 p.m..
