Northwestern cruises to win in Class B opener

HURON — The top-seeded and defending Class “B” champion Northwestern Wildcats made quick work of the Co No. 8 seeded Corsica-Stickney Jaguars Thursday afternoon, downing the Jags 3-0 in the opening game of the Class “B” State Volleyball Tournament at Huron Arena.

Set scores for the 27-1 Wildcats were 25-12, 25-8 and 25-13.

Sydney Schell pounded home 14 kills and Hannah Schentzel added nine to pace the Northwestern offensive attack, which saw setter Brooklinn Halvorson hand out 27 assists in the game. Ella Haven had five block-assists and Schell added four while Joclyn Haven led the defense with 12 digs in the match.

Corsica-Stickney, which falls to 19-4, was led by Morgan Delange’s seven kills, while Sutten Eide had 14 assists. Raven Barse led the defense with nine digs in the match.

Northwestern moves into tonight’s championship semifinals, with a 5 p.m. match against Colman-Egan, while the Jaguars will play in this afternoon’s consolation semifinal against Bridgewater-Emery

Colman-Egan 3, Bridgewater-Emery 1
The Bridgewater-Emery Huskies took the first set, but then watched the Colman-Egan Hawks storm back to take the next three sets and the win in an opening round game at the Class “B” State Volleyball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Huron Arena. Set scores for C-E were 20-25, 25-17, 25-17 and 25-15.

For the fourth-seeded Hawks, who improve to 25-3 for the year, Olivia Baumberger pounded home 17 kills and three solo blocks and Mackenzie Hemmer added 16 kills to lead the offensive attack. Braiden Westley doled out 31 assists in the game and led the defense with 29 digs. Hemmer accounted for 17 digs, Elizabeth Moore had 16 and Baumberger contributed 15 in the match.

The Huskies got 10 kills from Julia Weber in the match, while Kerrigan Schultz added 17 assists and 11 digs. Weber led the defense with 21 digs.

Bridgewater-Emery, which falls to 21-3 with the loss, will play Corsica-Stickney at noon in the consolation round, while Colman-Egan gets its shot at top-seeded Northwestern in one championship semifinal, set to tip at 5 p.m.

Chester Area 3, Faulkton Area 1
The Faulkton Area Trojans made a run after dropping the first two sets, but it wasn’t enough as the Chester Area Flyers stormed into the semifinals with an opening round victory at Huron Arena Thursday evening, in a first round game in the Class “B” State Volleyball Tournament.

The Flyers won by set scores of 25-21, 26-24, 24-26, and 25-19.

Chester Area was led offensive by three players, as Breckyn Ewoldt noted 15 kills - and added 13 digs - while Ella Pry and Jayda Kenyon each had 14 kills - as the Flyers move into the championship semifinals with a 22-2 record. Kenna Brown handed out 47 assists and shared digs honors with Emily Larson, as both had 18 in the match. Pry added three block kills as well in the match.

Faulkton Area, which fell to 18-6 with the loss, got 13 kills, 33 digs and 15 assists from Isabel Aesoph, while Peyton Melius had 10 kills and 19 digs in the match. Morgan Gutenkauf had 22 assists in the match and the Trojans had 10 aces as a team.

Chester Area moves into the championship round against second-seeded Warner, while Faulkton Area will face Hitchcock-Tulare in the consolation semfinals, at approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon.
