Omaha Nation rallies to win girls' title at Dakota Oyate Challenge

HURON – The Omaha Nation Chiefs overcame a first-half deficit to pull off a championship game victory over the Lower Brule Lady Sioux Saturday in the girls’ 2023 Dakota Oyate Challenge championship at Huron Arena.

Kaelynne Wolfe led Omaha Nation with 11 points. Mikkel Parker scored 10 points, including nine points in the second half as the Chiefs came back to secure the win.

The Lady Sioux fell to 7-6. Brilyn LaRoche led Lower Brule with 16 points, including four 3-point baskets. Courtney Traversie added 14 points.

HURON – The Marty Lady Braves doubled up the Wakpala Lady Sioux 60-30 to secure third place in the Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron Arena Saturday.

Marty moves to 3-8 behind 16 points from Hawk Bair and 15 points from Razario Zephier. Jayla Bruguier pitched in 10 points.

Wakpala falls to 7-9. Katie Trangsrud and Tyrianna Hawk Bear each scored six points to lead the Lady Sioux.

Flandreau Indian School 51, Tiospaye Topa 48
Niyah Sierra missed five of six free throws in the first half, but was a perfect 6-of-6 down teh stretch to help the Flandreau Indian School Lady Indian squeak out a 51-48 win over the Tiospaye Topa Thunderhawks and claim the consolation championship at the Dakota Oyate Challenge girls’ basketball tournament on Saturday.

Sierra ended the game with 20 points to lead the Lady Indians, who improve to 2-6 with the win. Haley Schmieg added 10 for the FIS.

Leilani Bowker netted 18 points to lead the Thunderhawk, who slip to 9-6 with the loss. Tiospaye Topa made only 12 of their 24 free throw attempts in the game.

The Crazy Horse Lady Chiefs (3-10) got 23 points from Tahca Zephier and 19 from Naveah O’Rourke to power past the Takini Lady Skyhawks 46-43 and take seventh place in the Dakota Oyate Challenge girls’ basketball tournament Saturday morning at Huron Arena.

Jai’Enna Big Eagle led the Lady Skyhawks (1-11) with 10 points.
