HURON — Orvel M. Schmit, 97, of Huron, passed away Monday, January 21, 2019, at Huron Regional Medical Center.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be
11 a.m., Saturday, January 26, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron with military rites by Huron Veteran’s Council. Burial to follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Welter Funeral Home or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Orvel M. Schmit was born May 28, 1921, in Arnott to Peter and Ida (Yotter) Schmit. He served during World War II from 1944 to 1946 in the U.S. Army. He was united in marriage to Dorothy L. Roberts August 22, 1941. He farmed when he was younger and then owned Schmit Trucking, retiring in 1997. He was a member of American Legion, the VFW, and the Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his children, Leona (Bernard) Kowalke, Linda Schuetzele, Thomas (Cheryl) Schmit, and Cindy Gabert, 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Janet Marie Fearon; granddaughter, Melanie Schmit; and sons-in-law Donald Schuetzele, and Frank Fearon; and his brothers, Reuben and Peter Schmit.
