HURON — Phyllis Boomsma, 77, of Huron, passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Huron.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with her family from 5 to 7 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Phyllis was born February 2, 1944, to George and Alice (Loeschke) Verhelst at Huron.
Phyllis was raised on the family farm, attending school at Valley Township School #1. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was very dedicated to her Christian values and Lutheran teachings.
On February 14, 1965, Phyllis married George Boomsma at Huron. They made their home in the Hitchcock area, where they raised their family.
Phyllis was a great cook, enjoyed gardening until recent years, and loved helping others. She was dedicated to caring for her family and friends. She enjoyed the farm life.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her six children, Georgia and David Sanderson of Huron, Gerrit Boomsma of Huron, Lauretta and Dave Vilhauer of Aberdeen, Glenn and Jennifer Boomsma of Brandon, Leon and Lori Boomsma of Wessington and Julie and Jeff Nelson of Redwood Falls, Minn.; and 13 grandchildren, Brianna Sanderson, Sam Sanderson, Mariah Vilhauer, Isaiah Vilhauer, Jacob Boomsma, Anna Boomsma, Elizabeth “Lizzi” Boomsma, Kennedi Boomsma, Jordan Boomsma, Annie Boomsma, Abigail Nelson, Emma Nelson and Elijah Nelson.
Phyllis is also survived by two brothers, Edward Verhelst and Robert Verhelst, both of Huron; and two sisters, Patricia and Danny Oswald and Geraldine Verhelst, both of Huron.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; two brothers, Bill Verhelst and George Verhelst; and one sister, Darlene Verhelst.
