HURON — Phyllis J. Modine, 87, of Huron, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at her home surrounded by her family.
Her Memorial Service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, February 24, at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. Visitation with family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Welter Funeral Home or one hour prior to her service at the church on Saturday.  
Phyllis Jean Mattke was born on November 15, 1930, at Sprague Hospital in Huron to Arthur and Elsie (Kukuk) Mattke. She was baptized on March 5, 1931 at American Lutheran Church.
Phyllis attended Cain Creek Clifton #4 Country School in Clifton Township in Beadle County through the 8th grade and then graduated from Huron High School in 1948. She was confirmed at American Lutheran Church on June 18, 1944.
Phyllis married Harold Wayne Modine November 22, 1952, at American Lutheran Church in Huron. Phyllis worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company after high school and then worked for optometrist Dr. Charles Robeson for 12 years. She was also the Program Director for Girl’s Club in Rapid City and then worked at Federal Land Bank (Farm Credit Services) from 1973 until retiring in 1987.
Phyllis was involved in many activities including Business and Professional Women International, an active 4-H member receiving a trip to Chicago, and spent many hours volunteering at American Lutheran Church. Phyllis also volunteered with the Red Cross during the flood in Rapid City. Her hobbies included needlework, reading, crafts, caring for her flowers, and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Scott (Sharon) Modine of Huron; brothers, Larry (Fern Marie) Mattke, and James (Karen) Mattke both of Huron; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold in 2004; her brother, Leonard and his wife Betty.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Huron Regional Medical Center Hospice, American Lutheran Christian Learning Center Scholarship Fund, or American Lutheran Church Women.
