Pie makers, take your marks!

HURON — “Alexa, add flour, butter and sugar to my shopping list.”
Whether they use the Amazon helper, or make use of a notepad and pen, pie bakers around the Huron area are creating their lists, to prepare for the 32nd annual Pie-in-the-Park pie baking contest, set for the final Thursday Night in the Park festivities on Thursday, Aug. 17.
This year’s judges - arguably the most fortunate trio in the city of Huron - are LaRon Klock, the Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Huron; Jodi Kobold, store manager of the Huron Wal-Mart Store; and Rick Picek, a self-employed contractor with Great Plains Enterprises.
The rules are pretty simple; all pies must be of the two-crust (one on the bottom and one on top) variety and those crusts are required to be homemade. Pies, along with the recipe for the crust and the fruit filing, may be dropped off at the Presbyterian Church, located on Fifth and Dakota, between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 17, the day of the contest.

Judges will make their choices based upon appearance, consistency and taste. It is suggested that pies be baked earlier in the day for the optimum consistency.
After the judges make their decisions and prizes are awarded, pieces of all pies entered will be available in Campbell Park.
First prize in the Pie-in-the-Park pie baking contest is $100 in Huron Bucks, second prize is a six-month subscription to the Daily Plainsman and third is $50 in Huron Bucks. Fourth and fifth places are awarded tickets to the upcoming Fair City Sertoma fundraiser.
The contest is sponsored by the Fair City Sertoma Club, the Daily Plainsman, the Presbyterian Church, the Tailgate Restaurant and the Campbell Park Committee.
Pie plates and dishes not picked up at the park can be picked up at the church the next day. For more information call Deannie LeRoux at 352-3068.
