Pirates, Lady Patriots earn berths in 281 final

It will be top seeded Highmore-Harrold versus No. 3 seed Hitchcock-Tulare for the girls’ 281 Conference Tournament title Thursday night, as both ball clubs survived overtime battles in their respective semifinal matchups.

Highmore-Harrold 55, Wolsey-Wessington 48
HURON — The Wolsey-Wessington Lady Warbirds staged a furious comeback in the final minutes of regulation to force overtime, but in the extra period, it was the Highmore-Harrold Pirates who got hot at the right time Tuesday afternoon. The top-seeded Pirates escaped with a 55-48 overtime win over the Lady Warbirds and a berth in Thursday’s finals of the 281 Conference Tournament.
The Warbirds found themselves down eight points with just over three minutes to play, but forced some turnovers which they turned into easy baskets and got a driving layup from Cortney Sprecher as time expired to force the extra four-minute period.
The Lady Warbirds led briefly in overtime, but three-pointers from Kassie Hale, Oakley Jandreau and Grace Knox gave the Pirates a lead that they made hold up.
The Lady Warbirds got 13 points and four rebounds from freshman Mya Boomsma, while Sprecher notched 10 and six , as Wolsey-Wessington falls to 3-5 with the loss. Chantel Haider added nine points and Lizzi Brand had four rebounds as well.
For the Pirates, now 7-2, Jandreau had 14 points and seven boards in the game, while Letha Jessen added 12 points and Hale had nine counters. Knox had seven rebounds in the game.
H-H will play for the title against Hitchcock-Tulare Thursday night, around 6 p.m., while Wolsey-Wessington will battle Sanborn Central-Woonsocket for third place in a game scheduled to tip at 3 p.m.

Hitchcock-Tulare 60, Sanborn Central-Woonsocket 56
Sanborn Central-Woonsocket’s Trista White hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left on the clock to push the game to overtime, but in the extra period it was the Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots who made the shots they needed, as the Lady Pats moved into Thursday night’s title game with a 60-56 win over the Blackhawks in overtime Tuesday night.
Dannyn Peterson scored 22 points - 12 of them from the charity stripe - and had 10 rebounds to earn her double-double on the evening for Hitchcock-Tulare. Kenidee Enander added 17 points and Ashley Masat led all rebounders with 13 caroms on the night.
For Sanborn Central-Woonsocket, Trista White scored 17 points and Brooke Doering had eight rebounds.
The Blackhawks, who fall to 4-7 with the loss, will play Wolsey-Wessington in the third-place game, at 3 p.m. Thursday, while the Lady Patriots will put their 7-3 mark on the line for all the marbles in the 281 Conference Tournament, when they take on Highmore-Harrold at approximately 6 p.m.

Consolation semifinals
James Valley Christian 47, Sunshine Bible Academy 18
The James Valley Christian Lady Vikings held the Sunshine Bible Academy Crusaders scoreless in the second quarter, en route to a 47-18 win in a consolation semifinal game Tuesday, during the 281 Conference Tournament, at the JVC Gym.
Brenna Held scored 20 points and had four rebounds to pace the Lady Vikings to the win. Karilyn Wieting had 10 points for JVC, which will go into the fifth-place game against Wessington Springs on Thursday afternoon at Huron Arena with a mark of 4-6.
SBA got 10 points and seven rebounds from Beth Konechne, while Ruthe Lopez also had seven rebounds.
The Crusaders will face Iroquois-Doland Thursday morning at 9 a.m. in the 7th place game, also at Huron Arena.

The Wessington Springs Lady Spartans earned a spot in the 281 Conference Tournament’s consolation championship Tuesday evening, with a dominant 43-28 win over the Iroquois-Doland Lady Chiefs.
The Lady Spartans were led by Grace Gran’s 14 points, while Avery Orth added 13 points and had 11 rebounds for Wessington Springs.
The Lady Chiefs got 10 points and six rebounds from Katie Dubro, with Jorja Huls adding six boards as well.
Springs will play James Valley Christian for fifth place in the tournament on Thursday afternoon, while Iroquois-Doland will look to win the seventh-place contest with Sunshine Bible Academy, at 9 a.m. Thursday.
