Play continues at Rooster Cup

HURON — Play continued Saturday, as day two of the Rooster Cup Hockey Tournament was played at Bergman Arena.
Four games were on the slate for the day, with play winding up today with a trio of games.

Neepawa 6 Huron 2
Neepawa’s Tysne Stanski recorded a hat trick, including the Teddy Bear Toss triggering goal, as the Neepawa Tigers downed the Huron All-Stars 6-2 in the final Saturday game of the Rooster Cup Hockey Tournament at Bergman Arena.
Stanski opened the scoring five minutes into the game, but Huron’s Carson Duba evened the score a minute later.
Neepawa’s Brady McLeod put the Tigers back on top with a goal before the end of the first period, then the Tigers added two goals in the second period to take control of the match.
Neepawa tacked on another pair of goals in the final period, the last one off the stick of Stanski with six and a half minutes on the clock. A last minute goal by Huron’s Walker Schiltz made the final score 6-2.
Tiger netminder Garret Rainkie stopped 26 shots in the game, as did Huron tender Jacob Wehde. But Wehde faced four more shots in the game for the difference.
The teams will close play today; Neepewa plays Mayport and Huron ends the tournament against Aberdeen.

Neepawa 8 Aberdeen 2
The Neepawa Tigers defeated the Aberdeen Cougars 8 to 2 Saturday, on the second day of the Rooster Cup Hockey Tournament, at Bergman Arena.
The Tigers’ eight goals came from seven different players, as they stormed out of the gate with four first-period goals, and goaltender Myles Brister made the early goals stand up.
Ben Rainka had a pair of goals and added two assists for Neepawa, while Tysne Stanski had a goal and three assists. Other goal scorers for the Tigers were Brady McLeod, Tyler Gibson, Wiley Speiss, Hayden Welpton and Jesse Jones. Brister stopped 13 of the 15 shots Aberdeen got on goal in the game.
Charlie Olson and Gavin Heier scored Aberdeen’s two goals - both in the first period. Goaltender Calden Frericks faced 30 shots on goal in the game for Aberdeen.
Neepawa will face the Mayport Ice Dawgs this morning at 8:30 a.m. in the final game of the tournament for both teams.

Mayport 4 Sioux Center 3
Mayport Ice Dawgs’ goalie Kade Susie came up with 30 saves and Reese Groth collected a hat trick Saturday, leading the Ice Dawgs to a 4-3, come-from-behind win over the Sioux Center Storm in the Rooster Cup Hockey Tournament.
Sioux Center scored twice in the first five minutes of the game as first Jonathan Vanderwere then Treyton Verbeck hit the back of the net for the Storm.
Mayport responded as Groth scored the first of his three goals midway through the first period. Seth Germunson tacked on the evener with four minutes left and the first stanza ended in a 2-2 tie.
Samuel DeJong put the Storm back on top just before the second period ended, but Susie put up a brick wall in the third period, stopping all 10 Storm shots, while Groth scored twice in the first two minutes of the period.
Alex Koops stopped 14-or-18 shots in goal for Sioux Center, who will close the tournament today against the Brookings Rangers at 10 a.m. Mayport will play Neepawa at 8:30 a.m. today in its tournament finale.

Brookings 9 Aberdeen 0
Dominic Dobesh scored four goals and the Brookings defense limited Aberdeen to only five shots on goal in the match, as the Rangers pounded the Cougars 9-0 in the Rooster Cup Hockey Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bergman Arena.
Dobesh and Alec Rice scored in the first period as the Rangers jumped out on top early. Mason Gerstner added a goal in the second period and then the Rangers erupted for six goals in the final period.
Dobesh had a third-period hat trick, Carter Shoup and Alec Nielson each scored and Gerstner tallied his second goal of the game to make the score 9-0. Gerstner also had four assists in the game and Jamison Honkomp had a trio of assists.
Dylan Gaerts only faced five shots on goal from Aberdeen, stopping all of them.
Brookings will close the tournament at 11:30 a.m. today when it faces Sioux Center, while Aberdeen will finish against the Huron All Stars at 2:30 p.m.
