SIOUX FALLS — The 727th Transportation U.S. Army National Guard committee of Brookings recently presented a $40,000 check to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Hospital Transportation Network.
The donation was the result of the 727th’s 13th annual Charity Poker Run, held in early September in and around Brookings. This year’s donation brings the total raised through the poker runs to more than $183,000.
The DAV uses the funds raised to purchase vehicles and to operate the network, which provides free rides to any veteran to the VA Health Care Systems and VA Clinics.
In 2017, the DAV purchased new seven passenger Ford vehicles for the Belle Fourche, Sioux Falls and Huron areas. In fiscal 2016, the program provided rides for 9,630 veterans, among the 22,341 volunteer hours logged by the program’s drivers, who covered 584,809 miles.
There are currently 27 DAV vehicles operating in the state.
