BROOKINGS — Jayce Pugh of Miller fired a five-over-par 75 on Tuesday, as the seventh-grader closed strong and claimed the top spot at the Class “B” Girls’ Golf Tournament at the Edgebrook Golf Course.
Pugh followed up a strong opening-round 83 on Monday, which left her in third place, with one of only two sub-80 rounds on Tuesday as she stormed to the top of the leaderboard. Bison’s Allison Kahler was the only other golfer to break 80 in the tournament, shooting 77 on Tuesday to move from fourth into a tie for second with Kaylee Johnson of Estelline/Hendricks, one of the first-round leaders, with matching scores of 161. Bison’s Greta Anderson, who shared the first-round lead with Johnson, shot 87 and fell to fourth in the race and Adisyn Indahl of Burke finished in fifth with a 173.
In the team standings, Estelline/Hendricks held off a determined Bison squad to win the team title by two strokes, 682 to 684. Deubrook Area was third, 10 strokes back while Howard finished fourth and White River took fifth. Bolstered by Pugh’s championship showing, the Miller Rustlers finished 12th in the team standings.
Other individual finishers from the Heartland region included Olivia Rink of James Valley Christian in a tie for 26th with a 189, while Miller’s Kaihlyn Anderberg finished in a tie for 60th with a 207.
Dayton Easton of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket shot 217, Miller’s Cassi Vanderwerff shot 225, Jalen Holm of Clark/Willow Lake shot 240 and Miller’s Mackenzie Kopecky shot 252.
Class B boys
BROOKINGS — Brody Boltjes of Platte-Geddes shot a two-over 74 Tuesday, to win a duel with Faulkton Area’s Bennett Cassens for the individual medalist honors at the Class “B” Boys’ State Golf Tournament.
After both shot opening-round 78s and trailed Great Plains Lutherans’ Sam Hansen by five strokes, Boltjes shot 74 on Tuesday, to Cassens’ 75. Hansen ballooned to an 83 and finished tied for third in the event with Tanner Preheim with matching 156s.
Wessington Springs golfer Blake Larson finished in a tie for fifth with a 157. Other top-20 Other Heartland region golfers in the top 20 included both Cody Cavanaugh and Rett Osthus of De Smet who tied for 18th place.
In the team race, the Chester Flyers shot a team score of 500 to post a come-from-behind win in the race as they emerged with the team trophy by two strokes over first-round leader Platte-Geddes and eight strokes over Deubrook Area.
Led by Cavanaugh and Osthus, De Smet finished in a tie for fourth in the team standings with a two-day total of 514, as the Bulldogs came from 11 strokes off the lead after the opening round to move into the top-10.
Other Heartland finishers included James Valley Christian’s Jevin Goertz who tied for 26th with a 171, while Derek Brueggemann of Miller shot 173 and tied for 30th, with Wessington Springs’ Jacob Messmer. Ryan Stahl of JVC shot 174 and De Smet’s Kalen Garry shot 180 and Brody Leisinger shot 188 to tie for 68th. Teagan Mason of Iroquois/Doland finished tied for 87th with a 197.
