Quilts of Valor presented to veterans

HURON — The Huron Area Quilt Guild presented six Quilts of Valor to local veterans.
Since 2008 when the Guild began the Quilts of Valor program, they have presented 38 quilts to area veterans.
The quilts are made as a group by the Guild and by individuals in the group. It is a way to show appreciation for the sacrifices made by veterans.
The quilts were awarded to:
• Gladys Haggar — U.S. Navy August 1944-May 1946
• Carroll Schultz — U.S. Army Feb. 1, 1952 to Nov. 27, 1953

• Lester Meyer —  U.S. Army 1951-1953 3rd Division Signal Corps
• Joel Gilchrist — U.S. Army 1966-1967
• Craig Tschetter — Marine Corps 1967-1971
• Dale Sattgast — U.S. Navy 1965-1972
Each veteran spoke about his or her service. Gladys Haggar spoke of her time working in Washington DC during WWII. Carroll Schultz and Lester Meyer spoke of their time serving in Korea. Joel Gilchrist and Craig Tschetter spoke of their service in Vietnam.
Craig Tschetter spoke of going upstairs at the Huron Post Office and talking to the Navy recruiter who referred him to the Marine recruiter in Sioux Falls — and he enlisted.
He has recently written a book, “15 Minutes Ago,” about his experiences in two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was surprised with a quilt presented by his sister-in-law.
Dale Sattgast was an air traffic controller for the Navy Agana, Guam and Whidbey Island, Washington.Quilts of Valor presented to veterans
