HURON — One driver in attendance during the Bauman Agency Harvest of Champions on Saturday at Dakota State Fair Speedway is going to walk away with Orv’s $5,000 Pot of Gold.

The event, which is slated to begin at 7 p.m., will feature the Repairablevehicles.com Tri-State Late Model Series, along with the WISSOTA street stocks, Midwest modifieds and super stocks.

The top 15 drivers in four different divisions, will be eligible to claim the top prize in addition to their winnings from the night of competition.

“Drivers will need to be checked in by 6 p.m., for the pit meeting,” track promoter Orville Chenoweth said of those eligible for the Pot of Gold.

“The first 15 super stock drivers in the gate will be eligible for the drawing since they haven’t raced here yet this season.

“We’ll draw one driver from each division during the pit meeting,” he said. “Then at intermission those four will come to the front of the grandstands and we’ll draw for $5,000, $1,000 and two $500 winners.”

After competing at Miller Central Speedway on Friday, the Tri-State late models will roll into DSFS with just two races remaining on the 2023 schedule.

Cole Searing of Huron is the current points leader in the Tri-State Late Model series standings. He has three wins in 10 events this season in the series, which gives him a 36-point edge over Blair Northdurft of Renner.

Shane DeMey of Denison, Iowa, sits 128 points behind the leader in third place, while Gary Brown Jr. of Brandon is fourth and Gale Vogt of Yankton is fifth.

Searing’s most recent victory came on Saturday at Park Jefferson International Speedway. He also owns Tri-State Late Model Series wins at the Huron track during the Challenge Cup event on June 3 and Huset’s Speedway in Brandon.

After two races at DSFS, Searing sits atop the point standings with 219 points, which puts him 13 points ahead of Josh Sskorczewski of Aberdeen. Chad Becker of Aberdeen, who owns the other Tri-State Late Model series win in Huron this season, is third, followed by DeMey and Justin Boomsma of Huron.

Cade Richards of Lincoln, Neb., holds the final stop in the top 15 of the late model standings at DSFS, but any absences from the drivers above him would allow some of the drivers currently on the outside looking in to move into the top 15.

“We’ll take the top 15 on the sheet, but if any of those aren’t here we’ll bring the bottom ones up to make 15 in each class,” Chenoweth said.

One of the drivers looking forward to a return trip to DSFS is Dustin Arthur of St. Lawrence, who was fifth in the feature race during the June 3 event.

“That’s a fun track and I usually do pretty good there, so I can’t wait to get back on it,” Arthur said. “It’s a bigger track and for some reason we just get around the place pretty good.

“It seems like its a lot wider track for us and you can get more racy on it,” he said. “At some tracks it seems like it’s a little tight, so you have to it a little easier on them.”

Maria Broksieck of Goodwin is the current points leader in the WISSOTA street stock division at DSFS after winning the lone feature race of the season at the track.

“It’s big and it’s fast, you don’t get that anywhere else,” Broksieck of the Huron track. “It’s been great with a couple lanes to pass on and be able to come through to the front.”

Broksieck’s success this season is also evident at various tracks across the state. She has recorded wins at Miller Central Speedway, Casino Speedway in Watertown and Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen.

“Nothing has changed really, maybe upping our game in setups and ability to drive,” Broksieck said of her recent success. “Honestly, it’s a dream come true. To think that we’d have 14 wins at this point in the season this year is something we never thought would happen.”

Rounding out the top five in the current street stock point standings at DSFS are Kyle Bertram of Dallas, James Hoing of Kimball, Matt Goth of Huron and Broc Stout of Winner.

Michael Bogh of Huron holds the 15th spot, while Brandon Hammill of Miller sits a spot back.

Adam Brotherton of Huron, who has a pair of top-5 finishes this season at DSFS, leads the WISSOTA Midwest modified standings heading into Saturday. He finished second to Scott Hansen of Garden City on June 3 and ran fourth, when Lorin Johnson of Miller earned his 100th career win at SFS on June 1.

Hanson and Johnson are second and third, respectively, in the standings. Tracy Johnson of Lake Preston and Lorin’s son, Lane, round out the top five in the Midwest modified standings.

The WISSOTA super stocks are making their first visit of the season to the Huron track after having an earlier scheduled appearance rained out on May 13.

Austin Arobogast of Huron is looking forward to getting back on his hometown track.

“I’ve only raced there a few times. I bought my car the year after they shut down full time, so I haven’t raced there too much,” Arbogast said. “Hopefully I’ll have good luck this year, I’ve struggled the last few times.

Despite not getting the results he has been looking for, Arbogast says he has fun each night out.

“It’s cool to be able to race in front of your sponsors and family who don’t travel with you,” he said. “More friends come out and watch, so it’s nerve racking, but it’s fun.”

Saturday’s program will wrap up the 2023 racing season at the Huron track. Chenoweth said future plans have yet to be solidified.
