Redfield, Dell Rapids 2-0 in state tourney

REDFIELD — Redfield and Dell Rapids are undefeated after the first two days of the 2023 South Dakota American Legion State Class B Senior Baseball Tournament, which started Friday.

Redfield Post 92 needed just five innings to record a 14-4 win against Elk Point-Jefferson Post 134 in the opening round on Friday.

Camden Osborn had four of the 11 hits in the game for Redfield, while Keaton Rohlfs had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Peyton Osborn had a home run and drove in four runs, while Erik Salmen also had a pair of RBIs.

Peyton Osborn earned the win on the mound for Post 92, allowing three runs on four hits during his four-inning stint. He had four strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Nolan Gall pitched the final inning for Redfield, allowing an unearned run on two hits.

Tayson Swatek had a pair of hits, including a double, to lead Elk Point-Jefferson. Hunter Geary added a triple for Post 134.

Geary started on the mound and went 1 2/3 innings for Elk Point-Jefferson. He allowed six runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking three.

Ben Swatek also pitched 1 2/3 innings for EPJ, allowing five runs on four hits, with two strikeouts and a walk, while Kayden Moore pitched the final 2/3 inning, allowing three runs on two hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Dell Rapids 2, Platte-Geddes 1
Dell Rapids used a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings to edge Platte/Geddes 2-1 in the opening round.

Leadoff hitter Dylan Kindt scored both of the runs for Post 65, which had just a pair of hits in the game. Aiden Boechler drove in one of the runs on a hit, while Kindt had the other hit.

Kindt also earned the win on the mound for Dell Rapids. He pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk.

Brayden Pankonen pitched the final two innings for Post 65, allowing just two hits, while striking out two.

Platte-Geddes finished with six hits, including three from Dakota Munger. He had a double to lead the attack for Post 115.

Caden Oberbroekling pitced 6 2/3 innings for Platte/Geddes, allowing both runs on two hits. He had 10 strikeouts and three walks.

S-M-C 15, Tabor 2
Using eight runs in the final two innings, Salem/Montrose/Canova recorded a 15-2 win against Tabor in the opening round.

Jackson Grady and Weston Remmers each had three hits to lead Post 140 to the win. Adding a pair of hits each were Braeden Kerkove and Griffin Clubb.

Jack Neises, Remmers and Grady each had a double for S/M/C, while Club had a home run and finished with four RBIs.  

Neises went five innings to earn the win on the mound for Post 140. He allowed one run on five hits, while striking out five and walking two.

Owen Alley pitched the final two innings, allowing a run on one hit with a strikeout and a walk.

Brady Bierema had a pair of hits, including a double, for Tabor. Riley Rothschadl also had a double.

Post 183 used five pitchers in the game.

Clark/Willow Lake 5, Castlewood/Clear Lake 3
A fast start helped Clark/Willow Lake to a 5-3 victory against Castlewood/Clear Lake in the opening round.

After scoring five runs in the first two innings, Post 60 used a solid outing by Trey Huber on the mound to hold Castlewood/Clear Lake to just one run through the final five innings.

Huber pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Lucas Kannegieter came on to get the final two outs for Clark/Willow Lake. He allowed one hit and had a strikeout.

Jakob Steen, Kannegieter and Mitchell Larson each had two hits for Post 60. Larson and Steen each had a double.

A triple by Lane Tvedt highlighted the offensive effort for Castlwood/Clear Lake.

Kegan Tvedt started on the mound and went five innings for Post 250. He allowed four runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Lane Tvedt pitched the final two innings, allowing a run on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Second round

Dell Rapids 6, S/M/C 0
Jack Henry and Drake Eastman combined to toss a 1-hit shutout during a 6-0 win for Dell Rapids against Salem/Montrose/Canova in the second round on Saturday.

Henry worked six innings, allowing the lone hit for Post 140, with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Eastman tossed a scoreless seventh inning, with a strikeout and a walk.

Brayden Pankonen had two hits for Dell Rapids, while Henry had a double and two RBIs.

Owen Alley started on the mound for S/M/C and went 1 2/3 innings. He allowed six runs on five hits, with two walks.

Carter Randall pitched the next 3 1/3 innings for Post 140, along just one hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Jackson Remmers threw the final two scoreless innings, with three strikeouts.

Redfield 10, Clark/Willow Lake 0
Behind a two-hitter on the mound from Owen Osborn, Redfield needed just five innings to get past Clark/Willow Lake.

Owen Osborn tallied five strikeouts in the win.

Camden Osborn, Owen Osborn and Keaton Rohlfs each had a pair of hits for Post 92. Rohlfs finished with four RBIs, while Peyton Osborn had a pair of RBIs.

Jack Bratland had a double for one of the two hits for Clark/Willow Lake.

Josh Kannegieter picthed 3 2/3 innings for Post 60, allowing six runs on five hits, with three strikeouts and seven walks. Lucas Kannegieter pitched the final 2/3 inning, allowing four runs on five hits with a strikeout.

Redfield advanced to face Dell Rapids in a championship round matchup on Sunday. Results from that game were not available at press time.

Elk Point/Jefferson 5, Castlewood/Clear Lake 1
Elk Point/Jefferson built a 4-0 lead en route to a 5-1 victory against Castlewood/Clear Lake in an elimination game Saturday.

Keaton Gale turned in 6 2/3 innings on the mound to earn the win for Post 134. He allowed one run on four hits, with 10 strikeouts and four walks. Tayson Swatek came on to get the final out.

Ty Trometer doubled to highlight the offensive effort by Elk Point/Jefferson.

Booker Schooley pitched the first five innings for Castlewood/Clear Lake, allowing five runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Jeremiah Wiersma held Post 134 hitless during the final two innings with three strikeouts.

Elk Point/Jefferson advanced to face Salem/Montrose/Canova in an elimination game on Sunday.

Tabor 8, Platte/Geddes 1
Tabor put up seven runs during its first at-bat and went on to defeat Platte/Geddes 8-1 in an elimination game Saturday.

Riley Rothschadl had three hits, including a double to lead Post 183 to the win. Logan Winckler had a pair of hits, while Brady Bierema had a double.

Rothschadl worked the first 3 2/3 innings for Tabor, allowing just one hit, while strikig out eight and walking one.

Winckler closed the game for Post 183, allowing one run on six hits with a strikeout during the final 3 1/3 innings.

Tabor advanced to face Clark/Willow Lake in an elimination game Sunday. Resuls from the game were not available at press time.

An elimination game between the winner for the Elk Point/Jefferson and Salem/Montrose/Canova game and the loser of the Dell Rapids and Redfield game will be held at 4 p.m., today with the winner of the Dell Rapids and Redfield game playing the winner of the Tabor and Clark/Willow Lake game 30 minutes after the opening game today.

The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, with a second game to follow if necessary.
