REDFIELD — Victoria Zirbel of Dakota Hills was girls’ medalist and Mitch Batchelor of Milbank broke the tape in the boys’ race Thursday afternoon, in the Redfield Cross Country Invitational, held at Fisher Grove State Park.
Batchelor finished in 16:25.82 to lead Milbank to the boys’ team title with 17 points. Webster Area and Timber Lake each had 31 points to tie for second.
Beau DuBray of Timber Lake was second and Riley Benning of Estelline-Hendricks finished third.
Several Heartland area schools participated in the meet, in addition to the host Redfield Pheasants.
Redfield’s Riley Whitley was the top individual finisher in 13th place and Brady Jordan of Clark-Willow Lake cracked the top 20, in 17th place.
Miller’s Caden Gortmaker was 21st and teammate Alex Schumacher finished 27th. Other local finishers in the top 50 included Charlie Spieker, C-WL, 28th; Keegan Haider, Wolsey-Wessington, 29th; Talon Knox, Miller, 30th; Zachary Kuno, C-WL, 41st and Jeff Boschee, Sanborn Central-Woonsocket 43rd. A total of 83 runners finished the boys’ race.
Chasing Zirbel across the finish line in the girls’ race was Rana Hegg of Webster Area and Heidi Olson of Mobridge-Pollock.
Aberdeen Roncalli won a tight race in the girls’ division with 22 points, followed by Dakota Hills and Milbank.
Locally, Miller’s Abby Ketelhut finished 13th and Avery Miles of Iroquois-Doland cracked the top 20 in 18th place.
Other Heartland area runners in the top 50 included Hannah Terkildsen of Sanborn Central-Woonsocket in 29th, Ronja Neumann of Wolsey-Wessington in 45th, and Allysen Croeni of Redfield in 46th. A total of 64 girls crossed the finish line in the girls’ race.
