DE SMET — Richard “Dick” Francis Halverson, Jr., 71, of De Smet, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2019, at his home.  
His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 28, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in De Smet. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet.  
Richard “Dick” Francis Halverson, Jr., was born September 8, 1947, to Richard Sr. and Margaret (Patzwald) Halverson. Dick graduated from De Smet High School in 1965, where he loved playing sports. After graduation, he attended General Beadle College at Madison. He moved to Des Moines, Iowa after college, where he worked on computers.
On December 27, 1967, Dick married the love of his life, Donna Rae (Paulson) Halverson. Together, they had three sons, Tony, Troy, and Tommy. In 1968, Dick and Donna moved to Sioux Falls where Dick worked at Morrells. In the early 1970’s, Dick and Donna returned to De Smet.  Dick started working at the post office and became postmaster until his retirement in 2005.
Dick was always waiting on a call from his good friend, Laird, asking him to go golfing. He also enjoyed fishing with his sons and playing with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his three sons, Tony (Dawn) Halverson, and Troy (Jodi) Halverson both of De Smet, and Tommy (Robin) Halverson of Watertown;
siblings, Jeannie (Paul) McMasters of Lake Preston, and Tom (Patty) Halverson of De Smet; his grandchildren, Anthony (Alisha) Halverson, and Skyla (Phil) Warkenthien both of Willow Lake, Teresa (Corey) Longshore of Petersburg Tenn., Daquirri Halverson of Brookings, Garrett Halverson, Grant Halverson, and Maddi Halverson all of Watertown, Mason Goldsmith, Jessica Goldsmith, and Kassidi Goldsmith all of Sioux Falls; his great-grandchildren, Brantley Longshore, Cooper Halverson, Gannon Longshore, Callie Halverson, Maverick Warkenthien, and Cambree Halverson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Halverson; his parents, Richard and Margaret Halverson; his grandparents, Lloyd and Madeline Halverson and Fred and Francis Patzwald; and his brother, Don Halverson.
