Ring, Clark honored during state tournament

HURON — Highmore-Harrold girls’ basketball coach and activities director Mike Ring was presented with Distinguished Service Award from South Dakota High School Activities Association during this last weekend’s Class B State Girls’ Basketball Tournament.

Ring graduated from White River High School and Black Hills State University and this was his 24th year since he began as the activities director at Highmore High School. He has been a teacher for the school district for 29 years.

Ring was Region Athletic Director three times, Region Boys’ basketball Coach of the Year and five-time Region Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year. Under his guidance, the Pirates have two third-place finishes at the state tournament.

Matt Clark of Huron received the 25-year Official Award.

Clark, who is a 1989 graduate of Gregory High School, began his officiating career working many lower level games and became a register official in 1995. He has officiated both football and basketball, as well as baseball umpiring during the summer months.

During his 26-year career, Clark has officiated numerous postseason games. He has worked in 13 state basketball tournament, including six championship games.

Clark has also worked two state football championship games (2002, 2016). He was selected as the Official of the Year in 2020 by the South Dakota Coaches Association.
